Villa set to join Melbourne City FC

NYCFC star David Villa is finally set to join the A-League’s Melbourne City FC in their opener to fulfill his loan obligations by NYCFC.

Austraila’s A-League opens next week as Melbourne City takes on Sydney FC on October 11th.“It’s great that David will be arriving in Australia in advance of the season commencing, ” Melboune City manager John van’t Schip said. “We are looking forward to welcoming him to the Melbourne City FC squad and having him train with the group at the earliest opportunity.”

Villa is listed as a “guest player” with Melbourne City, meaning he is limited to playing in just 10 matches with Melbourne City, keeping him “down under” until December letting him return to New York in time for training camp with NYCFC.

The A-League uses the “guest player” designation to attract big-time soccer stars with the condition of a short-time stay.

“Hopefully, I’ll be able to play at my best level in order to help the team,” Villa said in a statement.
