It took four matches, but New York City FC finally earned the first point on the road last weekend. The Pigeons drew 1-1 with Inter Miami CF thanks to a brilliant performance by Matt Freese between the sticks. The goalkeeper is the reason his team was able to leave Florida with any points.
Thankfully, NYCFC is about to start a five-game homestand that will be split between Yankee Stadium and Citi Field. This week, the Boys in Blue will be in Queens as they take on Atlanta United FC. The Five Stripes are 3-2-0 with nine points to start the season. Clearly, the team is doing better compared to the Pigeons, so the home side must have a strong performance to earn their second win.
While NYCFC has a poor record, they have not necessarily played terribly the entire season. There have been a few games where they have had solid performances; the issue was the inability to score. Or, they had a good half and a bad half in one match, like the loss to the Portland Timbers. Luckily, the team has a chance to use their homestand to change their fortunes or the lack of. First, they have to beat Atlanta.
This will be a must-watch fixture, especially since both teams will seek to win. Since 2022, the sides have drawn in three of the four meetings. NYCFC won the other one, so it can be expected Atlanta is hungry to grab their first win in a few years. Hence, the Pigeons will have to be at the top of their game.
