With the new stadium underway, it is time to look back at the long history of New York City FC matches that have been played at Yankee Stadium, and most recently, Citi Field.

After years of failed plans, the Boys in Blue will finally have a stadium they will call home after the second phase of Willets Point's redevelopment project was approved, which will also include new housing, a school, new stores, and a hotel.

The stadium is not expected to open until 2027. Therefore, NYCFC will continue to share ballparks with New York’s baseball teams until the construction is complete.

With that said, let's take a look at the top five NYCFC home matches since the inaugural season back in 2015.

5. NYCFC 3-2 Philadelphia Union June 18th, 2016: The Designated Players' trio of goals

One of the things that New York fans were excited about having an MLS team in their city is the signing of three huge superstars; David Villa, Frank Lampard, and Andrea Pirlo. Villa turned out to be the MLS MVP in 2016 with 23 goals and four assists that season. This year also included one of the best games from the Designated Players on the team.

It was always electric to enter Yankee Stadium to hear the fans cheer on these legends, and the 27,456 people in attendance saw a show. For the first time, all three players scored in a single match, giving them a 3-0 lead over the Philadelphia Union.

What was more iconic was the fans witnessed a classic Pirlo free kick. Despite allowing two goals to the Union, the Bronx side secured the victory in their iconic sky-blue tops and white bottoms in what was one of the most electric matches in NYCFC history.
