New York City FC fans can celebrate, because club legend Maxi Moralez is back! After questioning whether he would return or retire, the Argentine has officially signed a new contract for the 2026 season. This will be his tenth year with the club and his ninth full one. The news also comes after the players returned from the offseason, and he was not featured in the photos or videos.
Thankfully, NYCFC fans now know he was not featured because they did not announce his new contract until after the posts. Instead, the club waited until Monday to release the news and make the day all about the beloved Argentine.
Maxi Moralez has a new contract with NYCFC
It was also not shocking that Moralez is returning for another season. Many thought there was the possibility that 2025 would be his last year when he signed his last contract. However, he shocked everyone when he started every single game in Major League Soccer. He also played in 41 total matches, scoring three times. He had nine assists throughout the season, continuing to highlight how he can contribute offensively.
While Moralez is arguably not the same player when it comes to goals and assists from a few years ago, there is no question that he is vital to the NYCFC midfield. His precise passes, ability to maneuver around the pitch, and game intelligence makes him extremely valuable to the team.
Clearly, the Bronx side sees that as well. Sporting Director Todd Dunivant expressed this to newyorkcityfc.com. “Maxi produced a stellar season in 2025, demonstrating the consistency, creativity, and leadership that have defined his time with the Club. Maxi continues to impact games in meaningful ways, and beyond the on-field contributions, Maxi’s experience, competitiveness, and approach around the locker room help reinforce the Club’s identity. We’re pleased to have Maxi back with New York City for another season.”
Of course, whether Moralez does the same thing that he did in 2025 in 2026 is yet to be seen. He is turning 39. It is possible, though. Nobody thought he would be an everyday starter at 38.
And even if Moralez plays less this year, then there should be no concerns at all. NYCFC signed Nicolás Fernández Mercau over the summer, and his versatility allows him to play on the wings and as an attacking midfielder. So, when Moralez does not play, the other Argentine can play in his spot.
More importantly, Moralez's knowledge of the game will be beneficial to the younger players on the team. The Pigeons are lucky to have the midfielder back, and he will help NYCFC no matter how many minutes he plays in 2026.
