There are not too many free agents for New York City FC heading into 2026. Some players might leave via trade or transfer, but at this time, there have only been a few changes to the roster. One free agent who could possibly call an end to his career is Maxi Moralez. The fan favorite is 38 and will be turning 39 in February. But, he should play one more year, again.

Yes, the argument was made that Moralez should return for one more year for the 2025 season. And, he did, signing that one-year contract in January. The thought was that the Argentine would contribute in every way that he could. But many did not think he would be an everyday starter and vital to the squad, and that he should come back for another season.

Maxi Moralez can play another year with NYCFC

In 2025, Moralez played and started all 34 Major League Soccer regular-season matches and playoff games. He also played and started two of the three Leagues Cup fixtures. Often, especially as the season progressed, he was substituted out in the second half. But the fact that he played as much as he did and continued to influence the midfield highlighted his ability to still play at a high level.

Sure, the NYCFC midfielder only scored three goals this year, but he still had nine assists. His offensive production, which includes creating chances, is not like it used to be. The fact that he still contributes the way he does in the final third is something that the Pigeons can utilize in 2026.

Moreover, it is clear that the Boys in Blue have an interest on their side regarding Moralez's future. The club stated that the two are in conversation about his future, implying that they are willing to bring him back.

The question at hand is likely whether he wants to return or retire. There is also the question of whether he would be willing to play less and whether he wants to end on a high note. Again, he was not expected to play as much as he did this past season. But in the end, it is possible the final decision might lie with him.

Unquestionably, NYCFC would be okay if Moralez decided to retire. At the same time, he can still influence the team and would be a fantastic veteran presence regardless of how much he plays. Fans can only hope that he returns for another year.
