New York City FC is a young football team. The Boys in Blue only began play in 2015 and will enter their 11th season when Major League Soccer is back next month. As such, there are not too many legends in their history. However, there is one player loved by the fans, and that player is Maxi Moralez.

The Argentine was a free agent after the 2024 season, so his status for the upcoming season was up in the air. After months of wondering whether Moralez would return for one more year, the answer was finally given on Monday. The Pigeons announced the midfielder is back for 2025!

Moralez will play his ninth season with NYCFC. He began 2023 with Racing Club de Avellaneda before coming back to the Pigeons. His appearances were limited that year due to his ACL injury, but the player did well once he returned in May 2024. Sure, he did not score goals or have the number of assists that he did at the height of his career with the Bronx side, but he was impactful in the midfield. He had two goals and seven assists, so he is still influential in the attack.

NYCFC recognized this and knew he could still play. As such, Moralez was re-signed. "Maxi showed incredible resilience to return from injury and demonstrated his quality with some outstanding performances last year," said Sporting Director David Lee to newyorkcityfc.com.

"His leadership and creativity on the field helped us return to the playoffs and rallied those around him. Maxi’s impact extends beyond what everyone sees during matches, he plays a vital role in the locker room and mentoring our young players. As we continue to build, having a player of Maxi’s caliber and experience is pivotal and we’re excited to see his contributions this season.”

In other words, as Moralez turns 38 this season, NYCFC knows his production could decline despite still being able to play. His veteran presence and knowledge of the game make his signing valuable.

In addition, his new contract means a lot to the fans. The joy the Argentine brings off the pitch and his dedication to the club means everything. He is a legend not only because of his performances but because of who he is too.

NYCFC did the right thing by re-signing Moralez. It is unknown how he will perform in 2025, but if he plays similarly to how he did in 2024, then the contract will be more than worth it. Only time will tell.
