New York City FC fans better prepare for a late night on Juneteenth.  The Pigeons will head to California for a battle with the Los Angeles Galaxy.  The teams last met in the regular season back in 2022, when LA won by a narrow 1-0 score.  Still, the Bronx side leads the home team with a 4-2-0 record.

It will be a challenge though, for LA has been having one of their best seasons in recent years.  The third-place Western Conference team is lucky to have players like Riqui Puig and Dejan Joveljić.  Puig is an FC Barcelona product who has been a difference-maker in the Galaxy’s midfield.  He has six goals and eight assists on the year.  Then, Joveljić leads the team in goals with ten.

Unfortunately, the Pigeons are coming off a tough loss against the Columbus Crew.  The result ended their five-game winning streak, for a mix of some poor play and bad refereeing caused the loss.  Not only do they have to deal with a talented LA team, but they must figure out how to rebound on the road for the second time this season.  The difference is that the Galaxy is arguably better compared to Toronto FC.  Plus, the travel time is longer and the time between games is less.

This will likely be one of the largest tests of the season.  Things do not get easier for NYCFC, so it would be ideal to grab another road win.  Alas, despite the recent success away from home, the road woes of the past are not far behind.  A draw would even be an acceptable result.

Final Notes

For the second game in a row, Maxi Moralez came on and impacted the midfield against Columbus.  He also earned his second assist of the season.  Therefore, if possible, it would be great to see the Argentine increase his minutes even more.  The threat is Nick Cushing.  He may utilize rotation for this midweek game and put the Pigeons in a position that would hamper securing a win.  Still, seeing him play more in a match would be fantastic, for he can be a game-changer.
