Katie Stengel shocks Gotham FC fans with her departure
- Katie Stengel is leaving Gotham FC after joining last summer
- The forward is heading to Crystal Palace Women
Most fans thought NJ/NY Gotham FC was done with any moves for the rest of the season. They did make the surprise signing of Cece Kizer, but she was a free agent. She was expected to be the last move until the Bats made the shocking announcement regarding Katie Stengel.
Stengel, who only joined Gotham FC last season on loan before signing a permanent contract, is on the move again. The club announced the forward has been transferred to Crystal Palace Women. Her departure this summer was not expected, and it is unknown whether she initiated it or the team.
Nonetheless, it does fit Stengel as a player. She continues to be a journeywoman, for she had previous stops at the Washington Spirit, Western Sydney Wanderers, the Utah Royals, Vålerenga Fotball Damer, Liverpool F.C. Women, and more. At the same time, she will be missed, for the Bats are losing someone who was expected to play a big role for the rest of 2024, especially with the busy schedule.
Katie Stengel departs Gotham FC
As mentioned, it was shocking that Stengel left Gotham FC. She was receiving more playing time and continuously was impactful on the pitch. Plus, the team's injury history this year meant that it is better to have more players than barely any. Of course, there are plenty of forwards on the roster.
Still, Stengel was fantastic for the Bats. She was impactful with her play when she did not score. Her goals though were always vital to the team. Her best moment with Gotham came during the 2023 NWSL playoffs. In the semifinal game against Portland Thorns FC, she scored the game-winner in extra time to book the team's place in the NWSL Championship.
This year, the forward had yet to find the back of the net in the regular season. However, she still scored three goals, including one recently in the CONCACAF W Champions Cup. Despite her play being fantastic all year, it appeared her scoring form was improving steadily. Altogether, she had seven goals during her time with Gotham.
While it is unknown why Stengel is leaving, there is no question her short time with the club will be looked upon fondly. She was not only great on the pitch, but off of it as well. Supporters liked her a lot and thought she was a great team representative. So, she might be leaving for England again, but she will always be a part of Gotham FC.
