Gotham FC does the funniest thing with the signing of Cece Kizer
- Gotham FC recently announced the signing of Cece Kizer
- This move is a good depth signing but it is also comical based on the timing
Some fans might have thought NJ/NY Gotham FC was done with bolstering their squad with the closure of the secondary transfer window. They signed some talented players like Jess Carter and Jéssica Silva, but once Silva was signed, nobody thought the Bats would add another player. Of course, teams can sign free agents.
Instead, the club made a rare Saturday announcement. Cece Kizer, who recently parted ways with the Houston Dash, was announced as a new Gotham FC player. The forward was signed through 2025, likely as a depth signing. With the Dash, she played in just seven games in all competitions.
Gotham FC General Manager and Head of Soccer Operations Yael Averbuch West told gothamfc.com, "Cece is a high-quality player with experience and success over multiple seasons in NWSL. She is a versatile player that can play in the midfield or as a forward. We are very excited to welcome Cece to the club."
Gotham FC's signing of Kizer is comical
Kizer was an interesting move, but Gotham FC must see something in her where she can contribute. Her limited playing time with the Dash, who is in last place in the NWSL, makes the move questionable. At the same time, she did play more games with the Kansas City Current and scored 13 goals there. Perhaps the Bats based the signing on that.
Regardless, Gotham signing Kizer might be one of the funniest things ever. Yes, she was signed for depth purposes, but the fact they announced it the day before the team plays against the Houston Dash is extremely comical. The player is coming from a struggling team and is now with one who is doing well in the NWSL. The Bats are 10-4-4 and will compete in the playoffs unless something goes entirely wrong.
In other words, it is like, while not intentional, Gotham FC is telling the Dash they see something in Kizer that they do not. The Bats are willing to take a chance on her and see the potential of what she can contribute to the team.
What makes this funnier is that Jenna Tonelli reported she is available for Sunday's game against the Dash. She might be new to the team, but it would be awesome to see Kizer come on as a substitute and make an impact on the pitch. Understandably, Gotham would want her to adjust to her new team and might keep her on the bench. Can anyone imagine though if she were to play and score?
Again, the signing of Kizer was a little questionable, especially with the amount of attackers on the team. Hopefully, she will be an impactful player for Gotham FC.
