There has been a lot going on for NJ/NY Gotham FC and New York City FC. The Pigeons just won to end their losing streak while the Bats are heading on the road with only one point after their recent match.
With some news to cover about both teams, here is the first combined Gotham FC and NYCFC news roundup.
The Gotham FC and NYCFC news roundup: Taylor Smith, Malachi Jones, and more
Taylor Smith leaves Gotham FC
On Friday, Gotham FC made the surprising announcement that forward Taylor Smith, who was on the season-ending injury list, had agreed to the termination of her contract. It was clear she would be utilized as a depth piece once she was ready to go. However, the club and player agreed to part ways for an unknown reason.
Perhaps she is close to returning and has a team she can play for. At that rate, a trade, if the team is in the NWSL, would have been the way to go. At the same time, the Bats are notorious for their long injury lists. Her depth could have been vital down the stretch because of that.
No matter the reason, Smith has been a great part of Gotham FC since she joined in June of 2022. Hopefully, she will find herself back on the pitch soon and playing the game she loves.
An injury update for Malachi Jones
Despite winning 4-2 against Orlando City SC on Friday, NYCFC unfortunately lost Malachi Jones due to injury. The rookie had a nasty collision with Mason Stajduhar and hurt his leg. He had to be helped off the pitch and went to the hospital after the match.
As of now, NYCFC has not announced anything, but it is easy to imply that Jones will be out for some time. The forward had surgery due to his injury. While it is still unclear what the damage is and how long he will be out for, fans will surely miss his smile on the pitch.
9:35 update: There are some reports saying that it was a tibia/ fibula break or fracture.
Gotham FC says goodbye to their USWNT Olympians
After the draw on Sunday, Gotham FC celebrated their USWNT Olympians. Tierna Davidson, Crystal Dunn, Rose Lavelle, Jenna Nighswonger, Emily Sonnett, and Lynn Williams are all heading to Paris later this month, with Williams as an alternate. The club gave them flowers and a Johnnie Walker scotch whiskey bottle. There is one more NWSL match to play, but this was the last one at home, so the Bats wanted to make sure the ladies knew how proud they were of the accomplishment.
