Before the final games of the season, NJ/NY Gotham FC had leeway to win the NWSL Shield. It was thought that a 4-1-1 record could be enough for the final six matches, but now, the pressure is on the Bats. After losing to the Washington Spirit last weekend, the NJ/NY side is only ahead of San Diego Wave FC by one point. They remain ahead of the D.C. side by three points, but one loss could see the Bats lose out on first place and the NWSL Shield.
That is why the road game against the Orlando Pride is crucial. Gotham FC cannot afford to lose their final two matches after the draw with Angel City FC and the loss to the Spirit. It is vital that they do not go through a goal-scoring drought now, as they need to score more goals to win. They have scored one goal in their last two games, and when the Bats last played Orlando, it was during the scoring drought and rough start to the season.
The two played to a 0-0 draw, but again, that was during the tough start to the 2026 campaign. The question is whether Gotham can rebound after last week’s loss and score enough goals on the road to win. It might help that Orlando has already been eliminated from playing in the NWSL Playoffs, and perhaps they will not have as much of a fight.
But the NJ/NY side knows what is at stake. Three points guarantee first place, but Gotham would need help to win the Shield this weekend. San Diego would have to lose to Boston Legacy FC, and Washington would have to draw or lose to the Kansas City Current.

Final notes
It would be extremely helpful for Sam Kerr to show up with her scoring boots, as the striker needs to score more goals. She has been a vital part of the attack, but Gotham FC needs the Aussie to be the leader that she can be in the final third.
