It was a good weekend for NJ/NY Gotham FC. The Bats got back to winning ways by beating Racing Louisville FC, and in a convincing manner, too. That guaranteed another week in first place in the NWSL standings. In addition, the Washington Spirit lost their match, which means that the NJ/NY side has a five-point gap again.
As such, with six games to go in the regular season, the Bats are still in a great position to win their first-ever NWSL Shield. But what does the team need to do in order to guarantee that they will win the Shield?
Gotham FC just has to win
The answer is quite simple: Gotham FC just has to win. In fact, the five-point advantage means that the NJ/NY team only needs to win five games. Then, they could drop points depending on what the other teams do around them. The Bats have 48 points, and Washington has 43 points. Then, Utah Royals FC and San Diego Wave FC have 42 points.
Hence, even a 4-1-1 record for the rest of the season could be good enough to win the NWSL Shield. Gotham FC would subsequently finish with 61 points. Then, if the Spirit wins all of their games, with the NJ/NY side's loss being against them, they would end the year with 61 points as well. Therefore, goal differential would come into play when it comes to who finishes in first place.
Still, the likelihood of any team winning the rest of their games is not high. But it is possible, which is why Gotham must try to win every single match. Three of their final fixtures are against teams who remain in contention for the Shield: Washington, Utah, and the North Carolina Courage. In fact, the game against North Carolina will be next.
Meanwhile, there are matches that the Bats should win, especially the one against Chicago Stars FC. That is a home game, and Chicago is in last place. Anything less than three points would not be acceptable. It is also possible that the regular-season finale might be the final day of the NWSL Shield race, where Gotham must win.
The final fixture will be against Utah Royals FC. The Bats already won the road game, so they know that they can beat the Utah side. Still, the team does not want to be in a spot where they need to win to secure the Shield on the final day.
When all is said and done, Gotham FC has a chance to win the NWSL Shield. But until a few more matches are played, the NJ/NY side must continue to earn three points over the next few weeks.
