NJ/NY Gotham FC were just a few minutes away from a fourth consecutive victory, but instead will have to settle for a 1-1 draw with Angel City FC. This extends the team's unbeaten run to four games and drops their lead at the top of the table to four points rather than six.
It was almost a near-perfect game to go into the international break. Gotham FC went into second-half stoppage time with the lead, but could not hold on through the final whistle. Despite still having the best defensive record with just 21 goals conceded in 27 matches, this now marks six straight games without a clean sheet. They still managed a 4-1-1 record in those six games, but with the playoffs so close, Gotham will be doing what they can to start earning those clean sheets again.
For Angel City, this also ends a three-game winning streak of their own, but extends their unbeaten run to seven matches. They remain in sixth place, and it has been quite a remarkable midseason turnaround for the California side. They look like arguably the most dangerous and in-form team in the league at the moment.
The NWSL will now pause for the international break, with games going on hold until October 16th. This provides some much-needed rest for the Gotham FC players not joining their respective national teams, as it is the first break for the league since the month-long break for the Men's World Cup in North America in June.
Late goal leads to draw with Gotham FC and Angel City
As expected, it was a very defensive first 30 minutes for both sides, with neither team looking likely to score. Angel City did have the upper hand in the attack to open the game, but Gotham FC did enough to keep them off the board.
The NJ/NY side's first chance came in the 31st minute when Denise O'Sullivan pounced on a loose ball and quickly found a wide-open Sam Kerr. Kerr had plenty of time and space to shoot, but she completely flubbed the chance and missed the net with her preferred right foot.
Angel City then had their best chance of the half six minutes later when a poor touch from Rose Lavelle and a giveaway from Jess Carter resulted in a 2v1 situation with Tierna Davidson having to defend Prisca Chilufya and Sveindis Jónsdóttir. The two made a number of passes back and forth as they moved up the field, with Chilufya taking the shot, but her effort also missed the net. At the halftime whistle, it felt like both sides should have had at least one goal.
The second half began in a similar sort of manner as the first, with both teams playing on the more defensive side of things. Gotham managed to score the opener in the 66th minute when Midge Purce, who played further forward in this game in the absence of Jordynn Dudley, did Midge Purce-like things by snaking her way through defenders before playing a great outside-of-the-foot through ball to Lavelle.
Lavelle received the ball near the byline and put in a first-time, right-footed cross into the box that found Jaedyn Shaw, who ripped a strong shot on her left foot that Angelina Anderson managed to get a hand on, but couldn't keep out of the net.
This was Shaw's 10th NWSL goal of the season, becoming the third player in club history to score 10+ goals in a season after Kerr and Esther González. This was also Lavelle's third game in a row with an assist.
Gotham then went into their seemingly trademark 1-0 bunker from then on, doing very well to deny Angel City much of anything in the attack from the goal through to stoppage time. But this time, the dam ended up breaking.
Center-back Emily Sams and pseudo-defender Gisele Thompson combined on the right side of the Angel City attack that eventually saw Sams deep in the Gotham box. She then played a great ball to rookie Taylor Suarez.
Suraez, who had only come on as a sub in the 83rd minute, got off a quick near-post shot that went past Ann-Katrin Berger and gave Angel City the late equalizer. With so little time left after the goal, neither team could score the winning goal, leading to the draw.
The context of this game makes analyzing the match a little more complex. It was not good or bad. Yes, conceding a stoppage-time equalizer is never a good thing, but given Angel City have been one of, if not the most in-form team since the summer break, the draw looks less bad than home draws against teams lower down the table. Plus, the California side has won away wins over Utah Royals FC and Washington Spirit the previous two weeks.
Thankfully, the draw clinches a top-four spot for the Bats, which means a guaranteed home quarterfinal in the first round of the playoffs. They also sit four points ahead of the second-place San Diego Wave FC. This means that Gotham can clinch the NWSL Shield in their next game after the upcoming international break.
A win over Washington on the 17th, combined with a San Diego loss later that night against the North Carolina Courage, would give Gotham FC a seven-point gap with only six possible points left, mathematically clinching them the Shield with two games to go.
