The day is finally here. Decision Day. Game 30. The first 30-match season is almost to a close, and the postseason is waiting for eight teams. NJ/NY Gotham FC already knows they are in the NWSL Playoffs and will host a quarterfinal game. What the team does not know is whether they will finish in first place or second place. The NWSL Shield is still up for grabs, and it all comes down to the fixture against Utah Royals FC.
Entering the matchup, Gotham FC is in first place. San Diego Wave FC, who is the only other team that can win the Shield, is in second place. The Bats are three points ahead of the California side, so a win or draw will see them lift the coveted trophy for the first time in club history.
Of course, a win is preferred, as the NJ/NY side would like to enter the postseason on a good run. It helps that Gotham has never lost to Utah. They have a 4-0-1 record since the Royals re-entered the league in 2024. However, they are having a stronger season, as they currently sit in sixth place and will be in the playoffs. They also competed with the Bats in the last meeting, so this will not be easy.
So, if the home team wants to win the NWSL Shield, then they have to play excellent football. The ladies did the job last weekend against the Orlando Pride, but now they must do it again. A loss would mean that Gotham FC’s Shield hopes would lie with whether the San Diego Wave wins. Unquestionably, the NJ/NY side does not want to fall to second place after spending so much time at the top of the table.

Final notes
Gotham FC knows what is at stake. They do not want to lose out on the Shield after spending the last 12 weeks in first place. Not only would other teams judge them, but it would be a major collapse. So again, just get the win.
