NJ/NY Gotham FC put last weekend's disappointing loss behind them as they beat Utah Royals FC by a score of 3-1. While they did have their lapses in the game, this was potentially a blueprint of what the NJ/NY team could look like at their best. A strong defensive performance combined with a three-goal performance is just about as much as any fan could ask for from their team. If they manage to clean up a few of the mistakes seen in the first half and carry this type of performance into every game, then the sky is the limit.
And again, the game was not only a good bounce-back for Gotham FC from last week's loss to San Diego Wave FC, but it also built positive momentum going into Wednesday's Queens Classic against the Washington Spirit.
The Bats also forced Utah's second consecutive loss, something they haven't done since the opening two matches of the season. They are still in a really good position, but the matches do not get any easier. The same can be said for Gotham.
Meanwhile, it was important to get back in the win column and avoid losing consecutive games in the regular season for the first time this year. The playoff field is incredibly tight, with just eight points separating first and eighth place, so being able to keep pace with the teams at the top and bouncing back from a defeat was crucial in this regard.
3 points for Gotham FC
The game got underway with an action-packed first half. Esther González very nearly scored the quickest goal in league history at just 12 seconds. A miskick from Utah goalkeeper, who is a former Bat, Mandy McGlynn, fell at the feet of González. She tried to chip the ball with McGlynn off of her line, but put too much on it and sent the shot over the crossbar.
Then, seven minutes later, the Royalls missed an open net. Ann-Katrin Berger, out of her goal as expected, attempted to play a cross-field pass but slipped and underhit the ball. The pass ended up at the feet of another former Gotham player, CeCe Delzer, and she sent the ball to Mina Tanaka. The Japanese international skied the shot over a wide-open goal.
After a much calmer sequence of play, the game then burst into life again in the 20th minute. First, Berger pulled off an incredible double save when a Tanaka through ball found Cloé Lacasse, whose first-time shot and rebound were saved by the goalkeeper. Gotham then could not build on this momentum as just three minutes later, Utah scored the game's first goal.
A great through ball from Kiana Palacios ended at the feet of Delzer, who scored off of a great first-time shot to put the Royals up 1-0 at home. There was some question of whether or not it was offside, but the goal stood as Jess Carter kept all of the Royals players onside. The lead was short-lived, as just two minutes later, Jordynn Dudley was pulled down in the box by Utah defender Nuria Rábano for a Gotham penalty kick.
González stepped up, sending the ball in the opposite direction of McGlynn's dive, and equalized for the Bats three minutes after Utah's opening goal. Gotham then very nearly took the lead five minutes later when a cross from Dudley found González, who deflected the cross first time on her left foot, but the shot just grazed the outside of the post. Then three minutes later, Jaedyn Shaw let off a long-ranger that smacked the crossbar as the team continued their pursuit of the lead.
They found that lead three minutes into first-half stoppage time when a Reiten cross ended up finding the right foot of Tierna Davidson. Despite having a defender draped all over her, she got enough on the cross to beat McGlynn and give Gotham the lead going into halftime. Dudley, who was heavily involved in almost everything positive Gotham managed, did a great job of occupying two defenders to help create space for Davidson and others in the box during this corner kick.
With the lead in hand, Gotham shut up shop in the second half, conceding just 0.10 xG in the opening 25 minutes of the second half. Gotham scored their third in the 70th minute when second-half substitute Sarah Schupansky unleashed a phenomenal left-footed pass behind the Utah backline to an on-the-run González. She had a great first touch, managed to round the goalkeeper McGlynn and put the ball into an open net for a 3-1 lead.
This goal saw multiple milestones. This was Gotham's latest goal of the regular season, beating Davidson's 57th-minute goal against Seattle Reign FC earlier this year. This was González's first open play goal of the regular season since the season opener against Boston Legacy FC. She is also now tied with Sam Kerr for the club's all-time lead in regular-season goals scored. And this was also Schupansky's first assist of 2026 after she had managed five in 2025.
In the end, the ladies held onto this lead through the final whistle, earning a nice bounce-back victory in a very typically Gotham kind of manner after last week's loss to the San Diego Wave. This was also the NJ/NY side's 100th ever regular-season victory.
This win moves Gotham FC up to fourth in the table, with at least one game in hand on two of the three teams ahead of them. They now move on to the much-anticipated Queens Classic on Wednesday when they take on one of the three teams ahead of them in the table, the Washington Spirit.
