NJ/NY Gotham FC returned to winning ways with a 2-1 victory over the Orlando Pride. While this result in itself will not clinch the NWSL Shield, at the very least, they will enter the final weekend in first. They could still clinch the Shield later tonight with the Washington Spirit dropping points to the Kansas City Current and San Diego Wave FC losing to Boston Legacy FC.
As mentioned, this is a huge result not just in their quest for the Shield but also in getting back on track as they head into the playoffs. The club is missing a ton of players due to injury and went two games without a win. This should not only improve their security in the number one spot, but also boost morale and confidence within the locker room heading into Decision Day.
For Orlando, this was an overall pretty good performance, with them creating loads of chances and coming close to beating the defending champs even without Barbra Banda. Solai Washington continues to look strong and like a definite piece to build around for 2027 and beyond.
This moves Gotham FC four points clear of San Diego, with the Wave playing later tonight. Boston earning a draw against the Wave would make the Bats' task next week even easier, as a draw would be all they would need to win the first Shield in club history.
A much needed W for Gotham FC
The game opened up with a near disaster for Gotham. A little over 60 seconds in, a marauding run up the left wing from Marta eventually saw her find Solai Washington with a cross. Thankfully, the rookie couldn't get clean contact on it, and she put her effort wide of goal.
Washington then had a second opportunity just minutes later when she made a strong run towards goal herself, this time down the right. Unfortunately for her, she completely flubbed the shot, nearly missing the ball entirely, allowing Ann-Katrin Berger to claim the ball and end the danger for Gotham.
The visitors' first opportunity came in the 14th minute from an unlikely source as Tierna Davidson unleashed a great effort from around 25 yards out that went just over the crossbar. Orlando then went down the other way and had a chance of their own as Marta once again played a great ball to Kerry Abello, who timed her run to perfection, creating a 1v1 opportunity with Mandy Freeman.
It looked like Abello did enough, getting past Freeman and then rounding Berger in goal, but the Gotham right-back did just enough to put her off and force Abello to miss the open goal in front of her.
Gotham found the breakthrough in the 22nd minute as a header from Midge Purce made its way over Pride goalkeeper Cosette Morché, who, at 6'2", is tied for the tallest player currently in the NWSL. A great cross from Guro Reiten, who earned her sixth assist, which ties her with Jaedyn Shaw for the team lead in assists in all competitions, found Purce. The winger's header had plenty of power behind it and was accurate enough to give her side the lead.
A little over 10 minutes later, Gotham nearly doubled their lead. A header from Sam Kerr was well saved by Morché, with the rebound pounced on by Tess Boade, but defender Cori Dyke made a great goal-line block to keep the Gotham lead at one and deny Boade her first goal in a Gotham shirt.
The second half began at a frantic pace. Marta pounced on a Gotham giveaway and ultimately had her effort saved, but she would have felt like she was fouled on her way to the goal by both Jess Carter and Davidson. Then, two minutes later, a short corner from Boade found Reiten wide open on her favored left foot, but she couldn't get enough bend on the ball and sent her shot wide of the far post.
Gotham then doubled their lead just a few minutes later. Reiten's corner kick led to Jaelin Howell shooting the ball off the back post. Her header was similar to Purce's goal in the first half, both in terms of position on the field and the quality of the header.
This time, though, it hit the crossbar, with Davidson the first to react as she pounced on the rebound to score her third goal of the season.
Alas, Orlando responded three minutes later after a giveaway from Howell was picked up by Washington. She did a great job picking up the ball on the half-turn before she burned the entire Gotham backline in a foot race and coolly slotted it home.
Throughout the rest of the half, both teams continued to have chances, especially Orlando. This was an unusually open game compared to what most fans are used to when watching Gotham. There was a late scramble in front of the Bats' net as they had one last chance at earning the equalizer, but thankfully, that did not happen.
As mentioned, this was a somewhat un-Gotham-like performance, given the number of chances that both teams had in this game. At 2.96, this was the most xG Gotham conceded in a single game this season, 0.01 more than what they conceded in their 2-0 loss to the San Diego Wave in July.
But with the amount of injuries this team is dealing with, combined with the point in the season, Gotham FC will be less concerned with performance and how they won and more concerned with doing what is needed to earn the three points.
