The NWSL regular season is back as NJ/NY Gotham FC will resume the campaign on Independence Day. The team will be on the road against San Diego Wave FC and will seek to climb the table as soon as possible. But with tough opponents ahead of them, including the Wave, it will not be easy. At the very least, the Bats have already played a match since the June break, for they won their first-ever NWSL Challenge Cup last week.
But San Diego is at the top of the table. Yes, only four points separate the two sides, and Gotham FC has played two fewer games. Alas, the history of playing in San Diego is not the best, for the NJ/NY team has won only once there. Fortunately, that win was the last meeting between the teams. One game means nothing, though, for there must be a few more wins to break the trend.
Moreover, there is some very recent history that might influence the direction of the game. During the international window, the USWNT and Brazil played two friendlies in Brazil. In the second game, Gotham’s Emily Sonnett unintentionally caused an awful injury to San Diego’s Dudinha, who tore her ACL. The young player has become an important presence in the attack this season, and losing her could impact the Wave’s goal output.
While many USWNT fans knew it was just an unfortunate accident, will San Diego fans still be bitter about it? Will they make life difficult for Sonnett during the game? Will the team try to prove something? While it is unknown what the stadium will be like since it is the 250th birthday of the United States, and some fans might opt out of attending due to the celebrations, Gotham FC should still prepare as if they will be going into a tense battle.
