On Tuesday, the United States women's national team played Brazil's national women's football team in a friendly in Brazil. NJ/NY Gotham FC players Rose Lavelle and Emily Sonnett started the game, while Lilly Reale and Jaedyn Shaw remained on the bench. Tierna Davidson, who was also with the team, did not dress.
The USWNT won 1-0 thanks to an own goal by Brazil, which was caused by Sophia Wilson's shot being deflected. It was an overall chaotic match where neither team played their best. But it was physical, and many players forced one another to the ground and collided with each other. Plus, the pitch was not in the best condition, causing many to slip. It was a miracle that the USWNT came away without any serious injury.
Next Gotham-Wave match will be interesting thanks to Emily Sonnett
But for Brazil, that is another story. Gotham FC's Sonnett might have unintentionally caused Dudinha to suffer a possible awful injury.
The young Brazilian, who plays for San Diego Wave FC, was going for the ball at the same time as Sonnett in the first half. Sonnett fell to the ground first, causing Dudinha to awkwardly trip over her, falling backwards. As this occurred, her knee looked like there was some movement where she could have severely hurt it.
And right away, the forward grabbed her right knee, calling out in pain. While she needs to officially have it checked out, there is no question that Brazil and San Diego were holding their breath. However, it does not look good, for she had to be stretchered off.
Obviously, Sonnett did not intentionally cause this. It also was not an egregious foul. This was just bad luck from one of the many collisions that occurred. Alas, based on the way Brazilian fans can be, they probably do not see it that way.
Then, if it is as bad as it looks, San Diego will suffer from the loss of Dudinha. She is only 20, but the winger is turning into a major star in the NWSL and has been vital for the California team. Hence, it will make the next meeting with Gotham one to watch. It will be interesting to see what the vibe is like and whether fans of the Wave will be upset with Sonnett.
Moreover, the last time the two teams met was in California, and the Bats won on the road against San Diego for the first time. And funny enough, the first NWSL game back after the current break will be in California against the Wave. The USWNT-Brazil friendly has subsequently made this one to watch, and not just because it will be on Independence Day.
More than likely, Sonnett feels extremely bad about what happened. It was a freak accident, but the Gotham FC player was part of what led to the injury. But hopefully, it is not as bad as it seems.
