On Saturday morning, hours before the game against CF Montréal, New York City FC announced that the club has signed Arnau Farnós to a first-team contract. The deal will be for this year, with options for the next two seasons. The 23-year-old joins the squad after using up his short-term loan options from NYCFC II.
Farnós initially made his debut the last time the Boys in Blue were in Canada for the match against Vancouver Whitecaps FC. He also made his first start and scored one of the goals in the 5-2 U.S. Open Cup win over Westchester SC.
Arnau Farnós is a first-team player with NYCFC
NYCFC clearly needs the help, and the Spanish player can act as a solid depth piece. He is also versatile, where he can play as an attacking midfielder, winger, and occasionally a center-forward. Notably, the team called him a forward in the press release, but he was considered a midfielder in college.
Moreover, the club sees something in him, which is why they wanted to make sure that Farnós became an option for the rest of the 2026 campaign.
This is pretty awesome for the Spaniard since he was originally a 2025 SuperDraft pick, chosen in the third round. He opted to return to school for the 2025 college season, in which he led Oregon State University with 15 goals, tying the school record for goals in a season. NYCFC did not forget about him, so he was a part of the 2026 preseason.
With hard work and dedication, Farnós earned the contract. "Arnau has taken advantage of his opportunities with both the First Team and New York City FC II and has shown that he belongs,” said Sporting Director Todd Dunivant to newyorkcityfc.com. “His soccer IQ has earned the trust of his teammates and the staff, and we are looking forward to his continued progression.”
At the same time, his signing might be due to the fact that NYCFC never found a replacement for the injured Alonso Martínez. As such, Farnós acts as that stopgap signing. But again, he has been impressive so far, especially for a player nobody probably expected to get chances with the first team.
Alas, NYCFC is in a position where any help that they can get is good help. The player offers that. It would not be surprising for him to get multiple appearances before the secondary transfer window opens in the summer.
