On Saturday, New York City FC faced Vancouver Whitecaps FC. This was the first meeting since 2023, and the Pigeons entered the game on a two-game winless streak. It was going to be a tough battle, and while not unexpected, the Boys in Blue fell 2-0 on the road.

However, it was unexpected that the team managed to compete the way that they did. NYCFC remained in the match, especially with the better offensive performance in the second half. And while they gave up two goals, the defense had some big moments. The Whitecaps were insane in the attack, and there is no question that they would have had more shots on target without the blocks, and the steals throughout the 90 minutes were vital.

But nobody was better than Matt Freese. The goalkeeper had eight saves on the night, and most of them were not easy saves. His quick reactions were critical, for without him, this could have been a 5-0 or more win. Sure, they lost, but goal differential might be important at the end of the season.

There is a lot to discuss about the match. Here are three things we learned from NYCFC's loss to Vancouver Whitecaps FC.

Matt Freese was brilliant for NYCFC

As mentioned, Freese was vital for the Boys in Blue. Without him, there is no question that the Whitecaps would have more goals. Yes, the NYCFC defense was good for the most part. But obviously, they allowed too many shots on target. This allowed the home team to constantly threaten the visitors and forced Freese into action way too often.

The goalkeeper was focused, thankfully, and his quick reactions led to multiple saves that others might have allowed into the back of the net. Sometimes, it was like he drank a ton of coffee before the fixture, and it turned him into an energy rabbit.

One of the best saves from Freese occurred not because of speed, but his accuracy with where he landed. The ball was clearly rolling into the goal, but the keeper pounced at the right time and in the right spot to keep the ball out on the line.

It is a shame that no points were earned after his brilliant performance for NYCFC. It was also his 100th appearance for the team. At the very least, this was a game that shows why Freese should be with the United States men's national team this summer.

Malachi Jones is finally back

After 652 days, Malachi Jones returned to the pitch for the first time since his awful leg injury against Orlando City SC in 2024. That year, the winger showed promising potential, and fans were getting excited about the young player. But a collision with Mason Stajduhar ultimately sent the player on a long recovery journey.

Now, it was thought that he would return last year, but a setback required another surgery and more time on the injured list. Hence, the NYCFC forward missed the full season, and that is why he did not return to the pitch until Saturday.

This was a great thing to see, and perhaps Pascal Jansen can turn Jones into a top winger. Of course, it is vital that the team is patient and slowly brings him back. Nobody wants any other setbacks. But NYCFC has another option on the wings, and that probably means the world to the player, knowing he can contribute again.

NYCFC needs to end the winless streak

Listen, the Whitecaps are clearly a stronger team right now. But NYCFC is up there with the top teams in Major League Soccer. There is work to be done to be one of the best of the best, but fans should still feel ok with the season thus far.

However, there is no question that they need to stop this winless streak. With the U.S. Open Cup this week and then a home game next weekend, the Boys in Blue should absolutely get a win. Of course, they definitely need to win next Saturday's game at home to Charlotte FC. The Pigeons need to get back on track. They do not want the early part of the season to be considered an anomaly by everyone else.

So, end that winless streak, NYCFC, and start a new winning streak.
