What happens to the culture of NYCFC once Etihad Park opens?

NYCFC will open Etihad Park next summer. But will the culture change when the move occurs?

March 15, 2015, marked a day in New York soccer that many people will never forget. New York City FC played their first home game in front of 43,507 fans, giving them a lot to look forward to as they would go on to win against the New England Revolution 2-0 at Yankee Stadium.

Yankee Stadium, a place that is filled with so much baseball history and legends who have walked through the stadium, honored in retired jerseys and pictures, now had a new culture to make way for during the beginning of the soccer “boom” in the city that never sleeps.

NYCFC saw some former soccer legends wear sky blue in the final chapters of their careers. Frank Lampard, Chelsea FC legend and midfielder, spent two seasons in the Bronx after signing with the club in 2014. Italian soccer legend Andrea Pirlo also had a two-year tenure with the club.

The Pigeons fan base would get to experience so many memorable moments, including Valentín Castellanos’ 2021 Golden Boot season and his playoff hat-trick, David Villa cementing himself as a club legend and having his iconic hat-trick against the New York Red Bulls in 2018, and finally, the fan base watched the club hoist some silverware in 2021, winning their first MLS Cup.

Looking ahead to NYCFC's culture in the new stadium

Even in the current NYCFC era with Maxi Moralez, Tayvon Gray, Hannes Wolf, and Matt Freese, there has always been excitement around the club, and Yankee Stadium, and in recent years, Citi Field, have seen so many loyal fans make the trek to the stadiums on match days. However, Yankee Stadium already has a legacy, and again, Citi Field too, and it is time for the Pigeons to create their own path, breaking new ground and having a location and space of its own that feels more like a home and less like an Airbnb.

In 2024, the city council officially granted NYCFC approval for the Willets Point Phase II plan. In this plan, the club's future home, Etihad Park, will look to continue the legacy paved by Yankee Stadium while carrying it on for the foreseeable future.

The new stadium will make the team’s footprint bigger and brighter. However, will this move actually be making a misstep in erasing the organic atmosphere around the origins of NYCFC?

There is a certain poetry and freedom when one can witness fans marching to matches in the Bronx or Queens, flares burning, light blue smoke covering the air like a blanket, drums beating, people screaming chants at the top of their lungs, and an atmosphere so beautifully chaotic that even the police know to be close by. The marches and the games build community. It is where a fan fully understands the dedication and sacrifice of waking up early in the morning or staying out late at night to support the club they will bleed for and passionately defend in arguments about soccer.

For those NYCFC fans who do not have the fortune of watching their team in the stadium, supporters gather at sports bars within the city blocks to create a whole different atmosphere of their own. Even just the thought of the work it takes to spend three days converting a baseball diamond into a fully functioning soccer pitch makes these experiences within the fan base all the more special.

With the possible dreaded ticket price increase, Etihad Park may deter a lot of fans who have families and do not have the luxury of attending a pricier game in the new stadium. Not to compare apples to oranges, however, many have felt the same way when considering a team like the New York Knicks. Going to a game at the iconic Madison Square Garden has become so expensive that many fans have started attending watch parties instead of buying tickets because of the hefty price tag.

As the sky-blue flag continues to fly high in New York City, everyone will be watching and waiting to see how this beloved fan base is affected. Will this be a dream for NYCFC fans, or will it become a nightmare they will be begging to forget?
