On Decision Day, New York City FC knew that they were playing their final game of the 2026 Major League Soccer season. A frustrating year led the Pigeons to miss out on the postseason for just the third time in club history. Nevertheless, they still had one more match to play, and that was on the road against D.C. United. The opposing side was more short-handed than the Pigeons, so truly, a win was expected.
Thankfully, NYCFC did nothing that was expected of them. The visitors beat D.C. United 1-0 on Decision Day, securing ten wins in 2026.
Pascal Jansen, who has mostly been a little rigid over the last few months with the Starting XI, made a few changes. Some were forced due to injury, but others were given the chance to start for NYCFC on the final day of the season.
Luighi started as the striker, while Talles Magno started as the left winger, which is where he should have played all season. Then, Hannes Wolf got the start as the right winger. Raul Gustavo also partnered next to Thiago Martins, while James Sands was in the midfield. The lineup itself did not make much of a difference in giving the Queens side a chance to win.
NYCFC won on Decision Day
When NYCFC took the pitch, it was kind of a mix of looking like they wanted the win and looking like they just wanted to get through the game. That does not mean that the players did not care. Rather, that is what the match looked like.
A few players were extremely hungry for a win, and they gave their all on the pitch. This included Talles Magno, Thiago Martins, Nicolás Fernández Mercau, and James Sands. They played for the crest that they wore, so it was no surprise that the forwards were fierce in the attack while the defensive players worked hard to protect Matt Freese.
But the issue was that NYCFC struggled to break down a D.C. side that was missing multiple starters. They especially should have been a bigger threat against Jordan Farr, the backup goalkeeper to former Pigeon Sean Johnson.
Magno had the Bronx side’s best chances in the first half, including an incredible header from a corner kick in the 22nd minute. Farr’s quick reaction and the fact that he fell back to the ground earned him the tough save. Then, the D.C. goalkeeper stopped the Brazilian again four minutes later as Magno ran into the box and took his shot, which resulted in another save.
Alas, when the match was still level at halftime, it was clear NYCFC needed to come out of the locker room and give their all. But it was D.C. who did that, as they kept the ball in the Pigeons' defensive third and pressured the players. Freese and the backline had to get to work right away, especially during the home side’s three corner kicks in the first three minutes.
It was not until the 57th minute that NYCFC had a solid chance again. Fernández Mercau had a great run to get away from D.C. players and picked out Magno, who made a run on the right side. His crisp pass gave the Brazilian a good opportunity to score, but his eventual shot went wide of the goal.
D.C. continued to put on the pressure, though. Despite their problems, they were fantastic on set pieces, and NYCFC continued to give up too many. Plus, the team from the capital also began to have the better chances. Freese had to make three saves between the 60th and 65th minutes, so doubts about ending the season with a positive result rose.
Moreover, NYCFC was lost in their final third. They could not put together critical chances as the match progressed. Time began to tick away.
Oh, but remember Magno? The Brazilian did not give up, and neither did some of his teammates. After a vital block from Tayvon Gray, NYCFC went on the counterattack. Bénie Traoré powered his way through D.C. players to run from the halfway line all the way into the final third. He knew Magno was on his left side and passed the ball to the hungriest man on the pitch for a goal.
It took 87 minutes, but finally, the winger slotted the ball home past Farr. He knew NYCFC fans did not ask for much. They just wanted a little joy on the final day of the season. And the Brazilian and the Bronx side did that by getting the win.
As such, they finished in 11th place with a 10-12-12 record. It was a good way to end the year, but it does not end the frustration of the 2026 campaign.
The good news, now, is that 2026 is over. NYCFC can start building for the 2027 Sprint Season and beyond. The club cannot fully close the book on this season, as decisions must be made. But that will help turn the page to the new year.
