Major League Soccer fans are excited for what is to come. The league is transitioning to a summer-to-spring schedule, aligning the calendar with other major leagues around the world. But before then, there will be the 2027 Sprint Season, which will take place from late winter through spring. To add to that excitement, the league officially announced the schedules of all the teams, including New York City FC.
The schedule was released earlier than last season, but there are no complaints. This is an exciting time for MLS, and perhaps NYCFC will use the Sprint Season to get back on track. With 14 games and a full postseason, that is quite possible.
In addition, teams will face fewer teams, as the season is shorter. It was already known that NYCFC, like the other MLS sides, will only face teams within the conference once, with seven home and seven road games. In addition, the postseason will only include the top eight teams of each conference, and each round will be single elimination. But what should fans know about the schedule?
The basics of NYCFC's 2027 schedule
The short 2027 campaign will begin with MLS is Back Weekend, and the Pigeons will begin on the road as they do every year. NYCFC's MLS opener will be against Nashville SC on Saturday, February 20, who has won the Supporters' Shield. This will be a difficult match to start the year, but it does not get easier. Afterward, the Queens side will play away to FC Cincinnati before finally coming home for the home opener on Wednesday, March 3.
But it is not an easy way to start the final campaign at baseball stadiums, as Inter Miami CF is coming to the Bronx. So, if NYCFC does not change their ways from this difficult 2026 season, then it is possible for them to go winless in their first three matches.
Then, the final match of the regular season will be at home. Decision Day will see NYCFC face their rivals, the New York Red Bulls, in the Hudson River Derby on Saturday, May 8. This will be the final regular-season game at Yankee Stadium, which is fitting. Who knows if the Bronx side will return there in any postseason games or even anything special in the future?
Notably, the team is scheduled to play all of their home games at Yankee Stadium, with the exception of the D.C. United match being TBD.
Also, NYCFC's schedule is very lopsided. They will play four home games out of their first six, with those four being a four-match homestand. In a way, this does make sense, as these games will take place in March before baseball begins. And yes, that is tentative based on the possible MLB lockout.
That might be why the game against D.C. United, which takes place on Saturday, March 27, does not have a home as of yet. The Yankees are playing a game in the Bronx that day, but the Mets are on the road. Perhaps that could be the final match at Citi Field. Alas, fans will have to wait for the announcement.
Meanwhile, who will NYCFC face at home? Inter Miami, the Philadelphia Union, Toronto FC, D.C. United, the Columbus Crew, Charlotte FC, and the Red Bulls will all play in a baseball stadium for one final time before the move to Etihad Park. The Pigeons will see the remaining Eastern Conference teams on the road.
In addition, the times of the matches have changed. Usually, the majority of NYCFC's games, especially on the East Coast, are at 7:30 PM. Now, those games are at 7:00 PM. The Queens side will play at that time eight times during the season, with the latest game being played at 8:00 PM.
When all is said and done, the Sprint Season should be an exciting one. The question is whether NYCFC will improve between now and then and play better football where they actually compete for a postseason spot. At the very least, they should at least match their current number of home wins this season, which sits at five after the win over Atlanta United FC. After all, there are only seven home fixtures, and the fans deserve better after the numerous draws and losses that they saw in the Bronx and Queens.
