With the addition of Sam Kerr to the forward ranks, there was that question about what it would mean for the other forwards. NJ/NY Gotham FC has multiple options, and some already barely play. One such player was Katie Lampson, who has had limited minutes since coming back last season and then extending her stay for the 2026 campaign. Perhaps a trade might have been the route to go. But instead, the forward is hanging up her boots.
Gotham FC announced that Lampson is retiring from professional soccer. At 34, she was definitely getting up there in age. However, her value to the Bats when she was on the pitch was still important. After all, she was a big part of both NWSL Championship runs, scoring winning goals in two of the matches in both the 2023 and 2025 runs.
Katie Lampson retires, ending career with Gotham FC
There is no question that this was a shocking announcement. There were no indications that the Gotham FC forward was leaning toward retirement. However, the reduction in minutes and the fact that she is 34 might have led to that decision. She would also have been the third-string striker behind Kerr and Esther González.
That is not to say that the NJ/NY club would not have found a solution for Lampson. A trade to another club, or even a loan deal, could have been an option. After all, she is still a great depth piece and is a great veteran presence for any team.
With that said, it appears the striker was ready to say goodbye. "Soccer has been my guiding light for the last 30 years," she told gothamfc.com. "It presented opportunities to see the world, meet lifelong friends, and grow as a person. Soccer helped me earn an education, become comfortable being uncomfortable in new environments, and challenge myself every day."
She added, "I’m hanging ‘em up, proud of all that this career has brought me – the good, the bad, the highs and lows. I’ll always be thankful for the journey and cherish the lessons learned."
Obviously, this does not sound like a forced retirement, which is a good thing. It is sad that Lampson will not finish out the year with Gotham, especially with her knowledge and how she can help the younger players. Of course, she can always be available by a call or text, so her now-former teammates could reach out if needed.
Nonetheless, the announcement was shocking. Again, Lampson could have gone elsewhere if she wanted more playing time and to continue her career. But the unexpected move to retire was not expected by Gotham FC fans.
