Over the summer, NJ/NY Gotham FC brought back Katie Stengel for a second stint with the club, after leaving in September 2024. It was a lovely surprise, for she was not expected to rejoin the Bats. The contract was through the end of the FIFA Women's Champions Cup, which left fans wondering whether she would be back. And a few weeks later, an update was provided.
Gotham FC announced on Tuesday that Stengel has extended her stay with the NJ/NY side. The contract will run through 2026, and there are no options. As such, the team has signed a player to another low-risk contract.
It is good that Katie Stengel is staying at Gotham FC
Yet, the club knows Stengel and what she can bring. While the striker will not always score, she has scored some big goals, including a game-winning goal in the semifinals of the 2023 NWSL Championship and the vital game-winning goal in the quarterfinals of the 2025 NWSL Championship. That goal ultimately saw Gotham FC upset the top-seeded Kansas City Current and go on an incredible run of upsets to lift their second trophy.
In all competitions, the forward has scored ten goals in 55 appearances. She also has three assists. But Stengel, even when she does not score, is someone who can act as a threat. Her mere presence elevates the attack in a way that cannot be explained. It is almost like others on the pitch get more chances when she is around. But, of course, there is always the chance that she will score.
Plus, with so many younger players, keeping Stengel ensures the team has another veteran on the squad. Her experience and knowledge can help the younger players, especially the forwards. And, she already knows most of the team, so that helps with the chemistry.
Additionally, she is a great forward to come off the bench and can start when Esther González is unable to do so. Sure, the Spanish international is the starter, but fans should expect Stengel to see the pitch in multiple matches. It also allows González the chance to rest and for Juan Carlos Amorós to rotate more during busy weeks.
This was a great move by Gotham FC, and it was the right decision for both Stengel and the club. Both know and understand one another, and the Bats are once again continuing with their streak of extending those already on the team.
