NJ/NY Gotham FC has been extremely busy in the offseason. They have signed big-name signings like Crystal Dunn. The Bats have also brought back veteran players like McCall Zerboni. At this rate, it was thought they had completed the roster.
Gotham FC's contract extensions show commitment to future
However, the team was not done building for 2024 and beyond. On Friday, Gotham FC announced three new contract extensions for Yazmeen Ryan, Delanie Sheehan, and Taryn Torres. Torres was already known to have her contract extended, but this gives more details.
Per Gotham, Ryan is signed on through 2026, and there is an option for 2027. Sheehan's contract will take her until the end of this season, but there is an option for 2025. Finally, Torres' contract is through 2026. This gives the 2021 NWSL Draft pick time to build herself back up after missing all of 2023 after her ACL injury.
Meanwhile, Sheehan and Ryan might see less starting time after the USWNT players were signed. However, both are talented enough that they can fight for their minutes. They should still see some starts, especially in the future summer tournament since many of the Bats are expected to be in Paris for the Olympics.
The contract extensions illuminate Gotham FC's commitment to the future. The team wants to become the best of the best, and their moves in 2024 prove this. They can have the best Starting XI week in and week out, and that includes rotating the roster. This also guarantees the NJ/NY side has a deep bench with starter-type players waiting to appear in the second half.
Just when one thought NJ/NY Gotham FC was done, they surprised everyone with the contract extensions. Will there be more moves before the start of the new season?
