NJ/NY Gotham FC will start their 2024 season in less than a week. While the NWSL season will not begin until the following weekend, the Bats will kick off the overall season for everyone by playing in the NWSL Challenge Cup.

Meanwhile, the roster is pretty much set in stone. It is unlikely the club will make any moves until the summer. So, with Ali Krieger's retirement, and the fact McCall Zerboni will miss the start of the season, the captaincy is up for grabs. At the same time, one would not expect Zerboni to resume the captaincy.

So, who should be the captain for Gotham FC? In all honesty, there are many options for the team. There are many leaders, so it is difficult for the Bats to choose the wrong player.

There are many options to consider for captain of Gotham FC

One player Gotham should consider is Crystal Dunn. The NWSL veteran's experience as a winner on both the club and national team level is a great characteristic to have for a captain. In addition, she is a leader on and off the pitch. She always encourages her teammates no matter where she plays. Her diligence in her work can inspire others to work just as hard. She might be new, but she is representing her home area. Dunn could easily take on the armband.

Another option might be a surprising one, but Gotham FC should consider Midge Purce. When the winger arrived in 2020, she took on the spirit of the club right away. She is someone fans think of when they think of the Bats. Her passion is admirable and noticeable in every match she plays in. Purce should be considered.

One cannot forget about Kelley O'Hara. She has already worn the captain's armband in the Women's Cup Colombia. Of course, her veteran presence, experience, and leadership abilities are shown in every single game. She might have just joined Gotham last season, but she spent 2013 through 2017 with the team; it was just under a different name.

However, O'Hara is not expected to play in every fixture, let alone start. If she is to be named captain, then the club will need to name a vice-captain as well.

There are other players Gotham FC should consider. Hopefully, they will name someone soon and not leave fans questioning who the captain is like NYCFC has done over the last couple of seasons.
