NYCFC vs Tigres UANL: How to watch, time, and more of the Leagues Cup Round of 16

New York City FC has not won a game in regulation in the Leagues Cup, and the Round of 32 was no different.  The Pigeons beat the New England Revolution via a penalty kick shootout.  Justin Haak secured the Round of 16 after converting his penalty.

As a result, NYCFC will face Club de Fútbol Tigres de la Universidad Autónoma de Nuevo León, or Tigres UANL.  The Liga MX side has become one of the top teams in the last decade.  They finished last season’s Apertura in third place and Clausura in fifth.  They recently won the Clausura in the 2022-2023 season.  They also made it to the Round of 16 in last year’s edition of the Leagues Cup, where they lost to C.F. Monterrey.  Plus, they won the Campeón de Campeones in 2023.

In other words, Tigres is a talented team that always competes.  NYCFC will have a difficult challenge ahead of them, and it is difficult to see the Pigeons moving on.  They have not been playing their best football this summer and have been struggling to score on the road.  The match might be at Red Bull Arena, which has acted as a home venue in the past.  However, based on team rankings, the Mexican side is the home team. 

Moreover, NYCFC has played Tigres in the past, and the history is not pretty.  In the CONCACAF Champions Cup 2020, formerly the Champions League, Los Tigres beat the Pigeons in the quarterfinal via a 5-0 aggregate score.  This time, there is hope they will play better and reduce the number of goals scored against them.  Will the team from Queens win?  The thought is that it is unlikely.

Final Notes

It is still unknown whether Manchester City FC will sign Christian McFarlane this summer.  Regardless of whether he signs and leaves, he signs and stays on loan, or the teams wait until January, the left-back should continue to start and get experience.  He still has plenty of growing to do, but his natural talent is there.
