Not many people would have thought that New York City FC would still be in the Leagues Cup, getting ready to play in the upcoming quarterfinal match.  They would not have thought the Pigeons would have beaten Tigres UANL either to get there.  They played one of their best games of the season and managed to win in regulation for the first time in the 2024 Leagues Cup.  Thankfully, they did not have to win via a penalty kick shootout.

NYCFC surprised everyone, but the tournament does not get any easier.  The Bronx side must travel to Ohio to play against the Columbus Crew.  Fans will remember that the Crew ended the winning streak back in June.  It was a fixture full of controversy based on referee decisions.  Hence, NYCFC will seek to have a better match this time around.

However, playing in Columbus will be a challenge.  Again, it is questionable whether this season’s team can beat the Crew at their home ground.  At the same time, the Pigeons proved they were capable of beating the better teams after the 2-1 victory over Tigres.

While fans would like NYCFC to continue the Leagues Cup, the fact they made the quarterfinals is a great thing.  It was not an easy road, but the players did what was needed to continue their journey in the summer tournament.  If the Boys in Blue play the way they did in the Round of 16, then they should be proud regardless of the result. Of course, winning is preferred.

Final Notes

After his superb game against Tigres, Nick Cushing must start Maxi Moralez against Columbus.  He is still a difference-maker at 37 and improves the roster.  He gives them a stronger chance to leave Ohio with a win, so leaving him out of the Staring XI would be a mistake.
