New York City FC had quite a few departures during the offseason, and even before the primary transfer window closed.  Some were expected, while others were surprising.  One move that fans did not see coming was the loan deal for Nicolás Acevedo

The midfielder was loaned out to Esporte Clube Bahia in Brazil, which is a club that is a part of City Football Group.  There were questions to the move, which was originally deemed as an opportunity for Acevedo to develop.  However, it is likely the City Football Group connection, and then the move back to South America, that led to the loan.

NYCFC player, Nicolás Acevedo, is doing well while on loan

While it is unlikely for the Uruguayan to return to New York City FC, he is still a part of the club at this time, for he is on loan.  But how is that deal working out for the 24-year-old?

So far, Acevedo has made 22 total appearance for Bahia, and has been in the Starting XI for over half of the fixtures.  He has already logged over 1,600 minutes of playing time, and that will only increase, for the Serie A season just started.

In Brazil, there are multiple tournaments to play in, which increases the ability to get minutes.  So far, it does not seem to be an issue for Acevedo, which means the loan so far has been worthwhile.  It will be interesting to see whether he starts in the majority of the regular season games.

Additionally, the midfielder predominantly played in the defensive midfield throughout his career, especially with NYCFC.  As such, it was surprising to see he has predominantly played as a central midfielder while with Bahia.  Of course, Acevedo is known for his versatility, and with Bahia’s system of play, the central midfield might be the best spot for him.

Moreover, the player has two assists throughout all competitions.  He was not one to act as a provider at all for NYCFC, so perhaps the central midfield is allowing him to develop those skills.

It appears the loan move to Brazil is going well for the NYCFC player.  Although he is missed, sometimes such moves are the right ones, either for the player, club, or both.  There is no doubt though that having him available would have solidified the midfield for the Pigeons, and would have allowed for more rotation throughout the season.

Nonetheless, Acevedo is no longer with New York City FC, and it is likely he will either move permanently to Bahia or elsewhere.  Still, hopefully he continues to have success in Brazil, and shines for his current team.
