Kristie Mewis and Gotham FC part ways after two seasons with the club
-Mewis is heading for a new opportunity across the pond
After winning the NWSL Championship, NJ/NY Gotham FC is busy building for 2024. There is still plenty of room for growth, especially because they finished sixth in the NWSL standings.
As such, the team has already made some roster decisions and trades. More players were expected to leave. So, on Friday, Gotham announced that the club and Kristie Mewis have agreed to part ways. In other words, she was not sold or traded. Instead, she ended her contract with the Bats.
Kristie Mewis leaves Gotham FC for England
Mewis leaves Gotham FC after two seasons with the team. During the span, she played 39 matches and recorded over 3,000 minutes of playing time. The midfielder missed time in 2023 due to injury. However, she was able to return and became a part of the NSWL playoff run.
The agreement to mutually part ways has led Mewis to travel overseas to join West Ham United in England. She has played for teams outside of the NWSL in the past, but the experience was limited. This gives her the chance to play in another league and try for success elsewhere. Moreover, this move means she is closer to her fiancée, Sam Kerr, who plays for Chelsea Football Club Women.
Mewis will be missed by Gotham and the fans. Her commitment and hard work over the last two years was evident on and off the pitch. She was also grateful for her time in New Jersey. She said the following:
"I want to start by saying thank you. Thank you to the ownership and front office for your tireless hours behind the scenes, thank you to my teammates for teaching me what it’s like to believe again, thank you to the coaches for your contagious positivity, and thank you to our amazing fans who never gave up on us. Gotham has been the most rewarding community to be a part of for the last two years and will always hold a special place in my heart. I’m full of gratitude knowing the future is bright and I was able to be part of it. And most importantly, I’ll never forget our first championship, together."
- Kristie Mewis
NJ/NY Gotham FC are losing a talented midfielder. Mewis deserves her shot in England, and it will be exciting to see how she does with her new club.
