On Monday evening, NJ/NY Gotham FC announced the end-of-the-season roster decisions. The news arrives at the same time as free agency within the NWSL. This will be the start of the preparations for the 2024 season while the Bats continue to celebrate the NWSL Championship win.

Supporters already knew that Ali Krieger would not be returning. The NWSL and USWNT legend has officially played her final match, for she has retired from the beautiful game.

Gotham FC announced the roster decisions

In the end, Gotham FC announced that 21 players are currently on the roster. Only one player's option was denied: Sabrina Flores. This is not a surprise since the forward has barely played since joining the club in 2020.

The one option the Bats picked up was Sinead Farrelly. Moreover, the team "has extended new contracts to defender Ellie Jean and midfielder Taryn Torres" to bring them back. Then, Michelle Betos, Imani Dorsey, Allie Long, Mana Shim, and McCall Zerboni are free agents.

Regarding the free agents, it is unknown whether Gotham will have discussions with these players down the line. Plus, they might have clarified their desire to test the free agent market. It does not mean they will not return. Only time will tell.

Of the free agents, the one player that the club should work to bring back is Dorsey. The defender has been a vital part of the backline since 2018 when she won the Rookie of the Year. This season, she did not make an appearance due to stepping back to focus on her mental health. She revealed she plans on returning next year and would be missed if she signed elsewhere.

As the offseason progresses, trades could see other players depart Gotham. There are other free agents the team should sign as they continue to build into a top competitor.

Most of the moves made by NJ/NY Gotham FC are understandable. Then, there will be players testing free agency. Perhaps some will return. Regardless of the future, the Bats are in a great place as they look toward the new season.
