Gotham FC vs San Diego Wave: Time, how to watch the NWSL Challenge Cup

The 2024 season is almost here, and NJ/NY Gotham FC is getting ready to kick off the 2024 campaign.  While the NWSL season will begin this weekend, the Bats will have to wait to play their first regular season match.  Instead, the team and the San Diego Wave will face off in the NWSL Challenge Cup.  The fixture will mark the start of the new season.

In the past, the Cup was a tournament where every team would play.  In 2024, it was turned into a one-game event to make room for a new summer tournament.  The NWSL Champions and NWSL Shield winners will play against one another, or in this case, Gotham FC and the Wave.  Plus, if the two teams are tied, then they will go into a penalty kick shootout.

Meanwhile, this will be a debut for some of the Gotham FC players.  Some of the recent signings like Crystal Dunn and Rose Lavelle are expected to start.  It will also be the first true test for the squad to see how the new and returning players work together.  There could be some growing pains.  At the same time, the amount of quality on the team could lead to an immediate fast start.

On paper, the fixture should be an even battle.  Gotham FC and San Diego’s rosters have some of the most talented players in the league.  This can be anyone’s trophy.
