The 2024 season is just around the corner, and NJ/NY Gotham FC is building for the new season. After winning the NWSL Championship for the first time, the club decided to go all in with their signings.
The Bats first brought in Crystal Dunn, who has the chance to become the hometown hero. Then, Tierna Davidson joined the squad as a probable Ali Krieger replacement. But the Champions were not done.
Gotham FC signs two USWNT stars
On Thursday, Gotham FC announced the signings of Rose Lavelle and Emily Sonnett. The two USWNT players join the team after losing in the NSWL finals with OL Reign. They will help bolster and create a formidable midfield that might leave opposing teams shaking in their boots. Plus, like Dunn and Davidson, their contracts will keep them with the team through 2026.
Since Lavelle is an attacking midfielder and Sonnett is a natural defender who can play as a defensive midfielder, neither will be competing with the other. There is a chance the teammates will share the pitch often.
Lavelle could find herself up top with Esther González, Midge Purce, and Lynn Williams. She will be an attacking threat as she looks to rebound after missing a good portion of the 2023 season due to injury.
Meanwhile, Sonnett might return to the center-back position and team up with Davidson in the back. She could also be used as a utility player, going wherever she is needed. Again, if she plays in the midfield, then Gotham could produce one of the best in the NWSL. It does not matter where she plays, for her versatile abilities mean she will aid the team in the midfield or defense.
Gotham FC's General Manager Yael Averbuch West knew the club had to build upon the previous year. She had this to say about the new signings:
"We are incredibly excited to have two exceptional talents like Rose and Emily join the club. Rose is a crafty and entertaining player, and our fans and club will be very excited to watch her at Red Bull Arena, and Sonnett is a true professional and competitor, who understands what success in the league looks like. The club and our fans are extremely excited to have players of their stature as we build upon the success of last season."Yael Averbuch West
The excitement surrounding the new signings is spreading. NJ/NY Gotham FC will be a contender next season to win another NWSL Championship. Lavelle and Sonnett are fantastic additions to the club, and fans should look forward to the 2024 campaign.
