On Wednesday, NJ/NY Gotham FC announced the club signed free agent Esther González. The 30-year-old joins the club on a contract that will keep her with the team until 2025. There is also an option for 2026.

The Spanish striker last played for Real Madrid Femenino. She played just two seasons with the club but scored 39 goals in all competitions. As such, she leaves Madrid as the leading goal-scorer in club history. Also, she has spent her entire career in Spain. Gotham FC will be the first club she joins outside of her country.

Gotham FC has a new talented striker

González is a World Cup winner too. She recently won the World Cup with Spain, where she started three matches. She only scored once in the fixture against Costa Rica, but she scored nine goals in six games during World Cup qualifying.

It is clear Gotham FC signed González due to her experience and goal-scoring abilities. Head Coach Juan Carlos Amorós expressed this to GothamFC.com:

"We are excited to welcome Esther González and the quality that she will bring to the team. She fits well into our attractive style of play; she is a winner who works tirelessly on the press for the team, and she has an unbelievable hunger for goals and trophies. We cannot wait to welcome her into the team."

González will hopefully hit the ground running when she plays her first game with Gotham. At this time, Lynn Williams leads the team with seven goals in the NWSL. The next closest total is two, which is shared by quite a few players. The World Cup winner brings the ability to score a high number of goals. Hence, she should aid the team in the fight for first place. Plus, she enhances the attack by increasing the goal-scoring threat level.

More importantly, the signing of González and the extension of Williams already make NJ/NY Gotham FC a scary attack going into the next season. These are exciting times for the club, the players, and the fans.
