Gotham FC news roundup: Celebrating the Olympians and more
Sam Mewis lit the torch before Saturday's game
Ever since Sam Mewis had to retire from soccer, she has been out there supporting teams like crazy. So, it was not shocking the former USWNT star was at Gotham FC's game on Saturday, supporting the returning Olympians and the NWSL. She might not be able to play, but she keeps herself involved in aspects of the game.
So, Mewis had the honor of lighting the torch before the match, as it is now a tradition for the Bats. Usually, athletes, celebrities, local notable individuals, and more will light the torch, so it was great to see a USWNT fan favorite be the one to light it as the NWSL resumed.
Mewis might not have played for Gotham FC like her sister Kristie Mewis did, but perhaps she was supporting the team on the day since she was sporting a Gotham jersey, specifically a Lynn Williams one. Still, she was there supporting everyone, for she cheered on the Olympians when they were celebrated after the match. Mewis also had fun making content with the players, so it looks like she had a great time.
Gotham FC and Portland Thorns FC celebrate the Olympians
Since this was the first NWSL match back from the Olympic pause, Gotham FC and the Portland Thorns celebrated their returning medalists and other Olympians. They received flowers and a piece of jewelry to congratulate them. The Bats received jackets as well.
Of course, Gotham FC had their six gold medalists and one bronze medalist to celebrate. The ladies were given their gifts, pictures were taken, and they were honored by everyone at Red Bull Arena. It was a lovely day to celebrate, especially since the Bats earned all three points.
Ann-Katrin Berger is the footballer of the year
On Sunday, goalkeeper Ann-Katrin Berger was named Germany's Women's Footballer of the Year. She was the first goalkeeper to win the award since 1998. She was also the first German player to win the award while playing for a non-European team.
This is a well-deserved honor for Berger. She has been incredible since signing with Gotham FC this year. Moreover, she was a major reason why Germany won the bronze medal at the Summer Olympics.
