NJ/NY Gotham FC will resume NWSL play on August 24 after the break for the Summer Olympics and NWSL x Liga MX Femenil Summer Cup. The USWNT won the gold medal while Ann-Katrin Berger and Germany won the bronze. Then, Gotham secured a place in the finals of the summer tournament which will take place this fall.
In other words, there has been a lot going on with Gotham FC, including off the pitch. Here is the next news roundup which involves moves and the upcoming Chelsea F.C. Women friendly.
Gotham FC news roundup: Roster moves and Chelsea
Kristen Edmonds leaves Gotham
After finally getting some playing time again, Gotham FC announced that Kristen Edmonds is leaving the club. Per the team's website, the player and Bats have "mutually agreed to part ways, so that Edmonds can pursue an opportunity with Tampa Bay Sun FC of the USL Super League. "
This was somewhat shocking since Edmonds would have played more despite her recent injury issues. Her time as a starter would be limited though based on the offseason signings that have started many of the matches this season. Still, there is no question that she would have played with Gotham now that she is healthy.
It is understandable that she wants to try to earn more minutes elsewhere. The USL Super League is also new, so it gives her a fresh start. Edmonds will be missed, but fans can only wish her all the best.
Gotham FC gets money in a trade
Truthfully, any announcements about trades involving money are always funny. The recent announcement was no different. Gotham FC received $100,000 in allocation money from the Utah Royals. In exchange, they sent an international roster spot for this season and the next. It is unknown which team asked for the trade, but hopefully, the Bats can utilize the allocation money this summer or in the offseason.
Fans can watch the Chelsea friendly
Gotham FC supporters already know that the team will play Chelsea in a friendly this coming Monday. The Bats scheduled the friendly to have a game between the Summer Cup and the return of the NWSL.
Thankfully, the club officially announced the match will be seen on television. Fans in the New York City tri-state area can watch the fixture via the MSG Networks and those around the world can catch it via DAZN.
Of course, those who can go to Red Bull Arena should do so, for this is expected to be an exciting game. It is unknown whether any of the Gotham FC players who were at the Olympics will dress for this match.
