On Thursday, NJ/NY Gotham FC announced that the club signed Bruninha to a contract extension. This will keep her with the team through 2025. She initially joined the club last summer and has seen plenty of playing time this year.

The right-back has made 16 overall appearances so far with the NJ/NY team. Moreover, Bruninha recently was in Brazil's World Cup squad. She is only 21 years old, and has been making strides in her career. Known for her 1v1 defending, the right-back has also shown her goal-scoring abilities. This season, she has scored twice.

Gotham FC made the right move to extend Bruninha

As such, the move to extend her contract was a smart one by Gotham FC. Her potential and talent continue to shine as she plays week in and week out. She will only grow as a player, and the new contract will allow the continuation of her development.

Additionally, this will hopefully keep other clubs from trying to sign Bruninha sooner. As many know, the NWSL is no longer the leader in the women's game. Europe is becoming more popular, and rightfully so. The leagues across the pond are becoming more competitive as clubs invest in women's soccer. The only thing Gotham should have done was extend the Brazilian through 2026 or 2027.

Nonetheless, keeping Bruninha through 2025 highlights that Gotham wants to be a contender in the league. General Manager Yael Averbuch West expressed this to Gothamfc.com:

"As we continue building on the long-term vision for Gotham FC to perennially be among the top teams in the league, Bruninha is a crucial and consistent piece of maintaining a strong defensive unit. Her skill and international experience are important elements that contribute to the solid core of strong players around her."

The contract extension for Bruninha was the correct one to make. Gotham FC would be silly to let a rising star leave just when her career is starting to flourish. This shows they believe in her, and she believes in the club.
