It has been a frustrating season, but it is almost over.  New York City FC will play D.C. United on the road on Decision Day.  This is the final match for both teams, as both have failed to make the postseason.  The Pigeons were officially eliminated last week after the draw with CF Montréal, in which they gave up a late goal.  Of course, that story was all too common in 2026.

While D.C. is lower in the table compared to NYCFC, the game will likely be a tough one.  The Queens team lost at home earlier this year, and they last won in the District back in 2022.  And as seen last year and this year, they lost to teams that they should have won on paper.  Of course, the Pigeons are closer to their opponents in the Eastern Conference standings this time around.

When all is said and done, this might be the last time NYCFC plays some of their players.  After a tumultuous season, there are likely some who will not have their option picked up or be offered a new contract due to the change.  In addition, some might want to jump ship with so much uncertainty surrounding the team.  Hopefully, that will not be the case.

Nevertheless, there is one more match before the focus turns to 2027.  Here is a preview of Decision Day between NYCFC and D.C. United.

NYCFC vs D.C. United preview

Date

NYCFC and D.C. will play on Saturday, November 7.

Time

The game will begin at 4:00 PM ET.

Location

The match will take place in Washington, D.C., at Audi Field.

How to watch

The fixture can be seen on Apple TV.

Weather

Saturday will be beautiful in the nation’s capital. It will be sunny and 56 degrees.  The wind will be around 15 mph, and there is no chance of rain.  It will cool down as the sun sets, so fans will definitely want a decent jacket.

Injury report

For the final time this season, the injury report is as follows: Drew Baiera (leg), Arnau Farnós (leg), Alonso Martinez (leg), Matt Miazga (leg), Maxi Moralez (leg), Aiden O’Neill (leg), and Andrés Perea (leg) are unavailable.  Notably, Kai Trewin is finally back.

Players to watch

The final player to watch is NYCFC’s Nicolás Fernández Mercau.  The Designated Player was the team’s MVP and deserves that title.  Without him, the Boys in Blue might have been flirting more with last place rather than the playoff line.  Moreover, there is the question of whether the Argentine, after he declared that he wanted to stay this summer, will leave after the team’s awful year.  Ideally, this will not be the last time he plays in sky blue, but fans should watch in case it might be his last time playing in Major League Soccer.

With Sean Johnson and Tai Baribo both out due to recent surgeries, the D.C. United player to watch is Lucas Bartlett.  The defender and captain has been a bright light in another dark season and will likely make life difficult for the Pigeons.  He is also not afraid to try to score a goal, as he has four in the regular season. He is questionable, so it is unknown whether he will play. If that is the case, then fans should just watch everyone.

Prediction

The game is mostly meaningless, but it would be nice for the Bronx side to earn that tenth win.  So, with the season ending, the prediction is that NYCFC will win 1-0.  It will not be their best game, but they will do enough to secure three more points for one final time.
