Nicolás Fernández Mercau's comments on the transfer rumors are refreshing

The summer had New York City fans extremely nervous. Multiple reports said that teams, including fellow Major League Soccer side Sporting Kansas City, had interest and even made offers for Nicolás Fernández Mercau. The Argentine had joined the club only last summer, so a move so quickly, especially since the Boys in Blue desperately needed him as the tough season continues, would not have been a good move for the club.

There were even reports saying that he wanted to leave. It came from a reputable journalist, Germán García Grova, so it was not like it was some random social media account that some people believe. It did not make sense, though, for there was no indication that Fernández Mercau was fully unhappy here.

Sure, if the offer came from Europe, one can see the appeal. But NYCFC should not have considered any offers at this time. And now, the team's likely MVP of 2026 is speaking out about the craziness.

Fernández Mercau clarified to Christian Arnold of the New York Post that the final decision about his future remained with him. And in the end, he chose to stay with NYCFC.

The Argentine was honest in his comments, and it was refreshing to hear what he had to say. He told Arnold, "I know there was mutually agreed terms between two clubs, but at the end of the day, it’s a decision that I made with my family to stay here, I’m really happy here. This is where I want to be. But also at the same time, I am an important figure at the team and that helps me mentally to want to [be] here as well.”

He understood that leaving would hurt the Pigeons. Injuries, like the loss of Alonso Martínez, and awful mistakes, as seen over the weekend in the Hudson River Derby, have hurt the team. That is the difference in why they may not make the postseason. There might also be some questions now about Pascal Jansen and his leadership. That is a story for another day.

Moreover, while many teams had interest, and there were reports that an unknown team submitted an offer that NYCFC declined, only one was reported to have submitted an offer of $25 million, Fernández Mercau's value, and that was Sporting KC.

To no surprise, why would the star want to leave the Big Apple for Kansas City? The city is wonderful, but New York City is at another level. Plus, KC has been awful on the pitch and off it over the last few years. They are trying to make changes, but if NYCFC becomes healthy and fixes those mistakes, then the Argentine would be part of a top-four team in the Eastern Conference.

In addition, Arnold said that Fernández Mercau told him that he did not think it was time to leave the Boys in Blue, and stressed that he was happy to stay with the team. At this time, his future is in the Big Apple.

He also added that he recognized that there has been noise ever since he joined NYCFC. "My focus was always to be here in New York," he said. "Obviously, that’s soccer, you’re always gonna get transfer rumors and clubs that want you. I put that all to the side and have always been focused here. But it’s not just the last couple of weeks, it’s ever since I got here. My mentality has always been to be present. I’m happy here and obviously you can see through my performances and the results.”

These comments were extremely refreshing to hear. It highlights the professionalism that Fernández Mercau has, and it also shows how he respects the team. He did not try to force his way out, and more than likely, he will not do so.

NYCFC is lucky to have him, and they should try to do what they can to ensure that he stays with the club until they can find someone who can do exactly what he is doing. Ideally, he would be here through the first season at Etihad Park.
