It has been a few days, but the shock and happiness of New York City FC beating Charlotte FC on the road is still in the air. The Pigeons won 1-0 in the first game of the Round One Best-of-3 series in the MLS Cup Playoffs. It was a strong way to start the postseason, especially after losing three of the four final matches of the regular season, including Decision Day. Moreover, it was the first win in Charlotte.
Therefore, NYCFC will hopefully be confident and ready to go when the second game kicks off. Plus, Alonso Martínez, who finally scored for the first time since the last Charlotte fixture in September, scored one of the best goals of the year. This will ideally set him up on a goal-scoring run for the remainder of the playoffs. The Boys in Blue need their star forward to find the back of the net, especially when others, as seen in the first game, cannot score.
Still, the Crown is not an easy team to beat. In addition, they were without Wilfried Zaha during Tuesday’s game. This time, the star winger will be available, changing the way Charlotte’s attack functions. NYCFC, especially Head Coach Pascal Jansen, will likely need a different game plan.
Also, there is the concern about playing at home. The Pigeons lost six times at Yankee Stadium or Citi Field during the regular season. This is not normal for a team that usually is successful at home. That is why NYCFC needs the support of the fans, and they need to create a crazy and loud environment. But still, even that will not guarantee a win.
