Over the weekend, New York City FC gave up a 3-1 lead and lost to Atlanta United FC 4-3. It was an awful game defensively that was surrounded by individual errors. Unquestionably, the Boys in Blue should have left with all three points.
The poor result left a bad taste in supporters' mouths, for nobody expected the Pigeons to give the game away in the manner that they did. However, if there was one positive to take away from everything, then it was the postgame comments from Pascal Jansen. His honesty and saying things how they were was refreshing to see.
Pascal Jansen's comments are what NYCFC fans want to hear
Thankfully, unlike former head coach Nick Cushing, he was not vague with his answers and immediately got to the point. "But then there is a phase where we defensively, like you said, we switch off and we allow them to get crosses into the box and we don't defend the box well enough like we did last week in Columbus," he told reporters in the press conference. "You get punished for a few errors made."
Jansen's opening statement made it clear that the defensive errors were why NYCFC lost. The inability to defend the way they did against the Columbus Crew was problematic. The head coach ultimately blamed the defense for turning off and the errors as to why the team allowed "a few unnecessary goals."
In addition, Jansen highlighted that the goals given up would not have happened without the mistakes. "We gave them those opportunities to get back into the game," he said to the media about Atlanta. "Three out of the four goals are made by us I would say."
He did not deflect, stood there, and took the blame. He did not try to dig out the positives of how the result occurred. Instead, he said NYCFC lost because of them. Of course, Jansen was asked about the positive moments with the goals scored, but he answered the questions and moved on.
Moreover, he is willing to analyze what happened in the game. If given more time, then he might have taken the time to dissect specific moments.
The get-to-the-point statements from Jansen are exactly what fans want to see from the head coach, It is a breath of fresh air and makes it difficult to be angry with him, at least at this time. Hopefully, Jansen will continue to speak with the media as he does throughout the rest of the season.
