It is not shocking by any means that Gotham FC lost to Corinthians

It is okay to be upset that Gotham FC lost in the semifinals of the FIFA Women's Champions Cup. However, fans and haters alike should not be shocked at all.

NJ/NY Gotham FC began the 2026 season earlier than other NWSL teams when the ladies played in the semifinals of the FIFA Women's Champions Cup on Wednesday. With over a month until the new NWSL season begins, the Bats entered their first competitive fixture with a short preseason. Of course, their preseason is not over, so it was not shocking that the NJ/NY side fell to Sport Club Corinthians Paulista 1-0.

Yes, it is not ideal that Gotham FC lost, especially because they were supposed to represent the NWSL. Fans wanted to see the team lift another trophy, and that will not happen. Moreover, the match gives fuel to the haters on social media, who, for some reason, like to target the Bats.

Gotham FC's loss was expected

However, it is vital to recall that Gotham FC started their preseason less than a month ago. The last game was the NWSL Championship, and that was in November. The team had not played any friendlies, unless they played one behind closed doors and did not reveal that information. Sure, the offseason was short, but they still had an offseason.

As such, it was difficult to prepare for the match against Corinthians, who last played in December. Yes, the Brazilian side did not play a competitive game either since their last one, but they still had less time off than the Bats.

It is also important to remember that Gotham FC has had slow starts to previous NWSL campaigns. It can take time for the players to get going, especially with scoring goals. Hence, it was not surprising that they struggled to find the back of the net in the semifinal matchup.

Now, the NJ/NY side outperformed Corinthians on the pitch. They had over 60% of the possession and outshot their opponents 21 to nine. Stats might have been on their side, but the actual play was disjointed at times and not pretty. Plus, Gotham struggled to shoot on target, which ultimately hurt them in the end.

Still, the NWSL team played a little better than expected. But if anyone thought they could jump into this tournament and fight for the trophy, then those individuals are dreamers, and that is great. Realistically, the Bats should never have won the NWSL Championship, and the dreamers were correct. But in this case, reality was more fitting. Again, the preseason for the NWSL is still ongoing, and the last match was over two months ago.

Expectations should have been low from the beginning. Gotham FC was not ready for the Champions Cup. If this was in May or June, then the story would be different. Alas, that is not the case, and that is why the team should be given some grace. Maybe Sunday will be different, but even then, it would be shocking for the Bats to play well. But Wednesday's opponents are much stronger compared to Royal Armed Forces Sports Association, who they will play for third place. So, anything can happen.
