Soccer in the Big Apple is back in full swing, and on Saturday, March 8, New York City FC fans were in for a delight as the team hammered five goals into the net, elevating themselves past Orlando City SC. Yankee Stadium was truly electric, with the onslaught led by superstar midfielder Keaton Parks, who scored a brace, and veteran Maxi Moralez. Before one knew it, NYCFC was up on Orlando 3-0 before the halftime whistle, essentially putting the game away early.

After such a big statement win, NYCFC can now focus on their next opponent, the Colorado Rapids. The team currently sits in fifth place in the Western Conference in this early part of the season, currently holding a 2-1-0 record in three matches played, totaling six points in the league table. Last week in their game against the LA Galaxy, they put up four goals as a team, showing relentless ability to get in the Galaxy’s box. Rapids forward Rafael Navarro delivered a brace in front of the home crowd.

With both NYCFC and Colorado having strong matches last week, this sets the stage for what should be an entertaining, on-the-edge-of-your-seat game. Both sides typically line up in a 4-2-3-1 and sometimes a 4-3-3, which focuses on very aggressive, high pressing lines and operating defensively using the mid-block of the pitch.  The Colorado Rapids take advantage of their chances and can create space in between and behind opposing defenses. NYCFC, who is very lethal within individual 1v1 matchups with excellent on-the-ball movement, can absorb a defender with one or two moves and penetrate the opponent’s box with a high-percentage goal opportunity.

Historically, according to FOTMOB, NYCFC has won three of the seven matches that the two clubs have had, with three others ending in a draw. Then, when the teams met in 2024, NYCFC suffered the first and only loss against the Rapids.
