Every game is another game closer to the NWSL Shield. NJ/NY Gotham FC is still in the driving seat after their win against the North Carolina Courage. Jordynn Dudley was the hero of the match and ensured that the Bats maintained their five-point lead in the standings. As such, the team will aim to earn three more points when they host Chicago Stars FC.
The teams last met in April when it was still early in the season. Gotham FC won after a solid performance that saw them win their second match of 2026. As fans will recall, they had a tough start to the campaign, so this was a critical win at the time. And since then, the Bats have done extremely well. There is a reason why they have a 16-4-6 record. But Chicago has had another poor year.
After 25 games, the Windy City team is in last place with a 5-18-2 record. Since the June break, they have only won twice, and last won on August 23. This poor run of results is not too shocking, as the Stars have finished last in two of their last three seasons, and they are bound for another last-place finish. Arguably, the team has not been run the way that they should be, and that has ultimately sent them down the dark path of losses.
Nevertheless, it is important that Gotham does not enter this match thinking that this will be an easy win. There is still plenty of talent on the Chicago side. In addition, not respecting the opponent can lead to losses, regardless of how good a team is. Knowing the mentality of the Bats, that is likely not to be a concern. Still, they must focus on earning the three points.
