It has finally happened! NJ/NY Gotham FC earned the first NWSL Shield in club history by virtue of a 2-0 victory over Utah Royals FC. After weeks of being close but not quite there when it came to clinching the Shield, the Bats did what they needed to do on Decision Day in order to secure their end-of-season spot at the top of the table.
Not only is this a great result with regard to the hardware that was secured, but it was also a great way for Gotham FC to head into the NWSL Playoffs. After winning last week in spite of their performance against the Orlando Pride, they won this week because of their performance, setting themselves up nicely with a bit of momentum heading into the playoffs.
For Utah, they were the only one of the eight playoff teams to lose on Decision Day, dropping them to seventh place in the table and setting up a trip to San Diego Wave FC in the quarterfinals. Despite this, this was a great year for Utah in that they made it to the playoffs for the first time in club history. While the results dropped off in the second half of the season as they went into the summer break at the top of the table, this was by far and away their greatest season ever. Also, if they lose in the quarterfinals, this sets them up perfectly to continue to build into 2027.
Meanwhile, this Shield win is Gotham's fifth trophy in the last four years, adding to their two NWSL Championships in 2023 and 2025, their CONCACAF W Champions Cup win in 2025, and the Challenge Cup earlier this year. And they managed to win the Shield in what was the longest season in NWSL history, at 30 games.
Even more silverware for Gotham FC
Gotham FC got off to a fast start in this one as they managed to score the opening goal in less than 10 minutes. Midge Purce, who had already produced multiple dangerous moments down the right side to this point, fizzed in a cross that deflected off a Royals defender right to Guro Reiten. The Norwegian tapped the ball into an empty net to give her side the lead. This was her eighth goal contribution of the season, tying her with Sam Kerr for second on the team in NWSL goal contributions. They both sit behind Jaedyn Shaw, who has 15.
Just four minutes later, Ann-Katrin Berger was called into action, producing a great save on Japanese international Miyabi Moriya. This was the first of two saves she made in the first half, with the second coming around the 30 minute-mark.
A worrying moment for Gotham came in the 20th minute when Jaelin Howell went down with a non-contact injury and required on-field treatment for a few minutes. She managed to get up and walk off the field under her own power, but she went straight down the tunnel and was replaced by Savannah McCaskill.
Gotham nearly doubled their lead in the 36th minute when a cross-goal header from Kerr found McCaskill wide open on the edge of the six-yard box. She did well to bring down and control the ball, but seemingly thought she had less time than she did and skied her effort over the crossbar. Still, the Bats held onto the 1-0 lead going into halftime.
After what was a very open and un-Gotham-like performance last week against the Pride, the second half saw a return to the usual lockdown, suffocation by possession style fans are used to, limiting Utah to just 0.14 xG and zero shots on target.
The second half also saw the return of two key players from injury, with Jaedyn Shaw coming on in the 60th minute, and then Rose Lavelle making an appearance in the 76th. The former subsequently put the game to bed in the 80th minute by scoring Gotham's second of the game. Another great cross from Purce landed near Shaw, who got just enough on the ball to guide it off the post and into the net. This gave the NJ/NY team a lead they wouldn't relinquish, holding it through the final whistle and securing the first NWSL Shield in club history.
Not only was this the first Shield in club history, but it was also the first time the club has won a trophy at home in front of their own fans during this incredible recent stretch of success. A sentiment really appreciated by both Purce and Mandy Freeman, the two longest-tenured players at the club, in their postgame comments.
Gotham FC will now play Seattle Reign FC next Sunday in the playoff quarterfinal in just their second-ever home playoff match. This marks the first step in their quest to become the first team in NWSL to win a domestic treble of the NWSL Challenge Cup, Shield, and Championship.
