Gotham FC earned a scoreless road draw away to Angel City FC

NJ/NY Gotham FC only managed a point in their final West Coast trip of the 2026 campaign thanks to a 0-0 draw with Angel City FC. It was a bit of a weird one, with the Bats seemingly unable to really turn on the attacking jets for large portions of the match. Still, it is important to remember that even though Angel City is in ninth place, they are one of the best defensive teams in the NWSL.

It's frustrating to see the winning streak come to an end, but all things considered, this is far from a bad draw. Cross-country travel is always difficult for teams, and as mentioned, they played a top defensive side.

On the other hand, Angel City viewed this as a potential statement game. A win at home against the league leaders to break up their five-game winless skid would have done wonders for them. It was not meant to be, though, and they now need to quickly shift their attention to another big game on Wednesday away to the North Carolina Courage.

Gotham FC will now head back home for another big match against Portland Thorns FC, who have jumped up to third in the table. A win would obviously be huge and bring them that much closer to their first NWSL Shield win in club history.

A point a piece between Gotham FC and Angel City

As the game got going, Angel City were pretty clearly attacking down the right-hand side. They were likely targeting Guro Reiten, who is not a natural left-back. All three of Prisca Chilufya, Claire Emslie, and Gisele Thompson got plenty of touches and crosses from that right-hand side, but were unable to produce many dangerous chances.

The game was then brought to a screeching halt in the 31st minute when a tangle between Angel City defender Sarah Gorden and Rose Lavelle resulted in the Gotham FC midfielder hitting the back of her head hard on the ground. Lavelle spent a lot of time down, receiving treatment and testing from team physicians from both teams as well as the independent doctor.

She eventually walked off the field with minimal help but went straight down the tunnel and out of the game. She was replaced by Mandy Freeman in the 37th minute.

Arguably Gotham's best chance of the half came in the 44th minute when Jaedyn Shaw found herself in plenty of space from just outside the box. She let off a strong shot that ended up going just wide of goal. It was a somewhat frustrating first half attacking-wise for the NJ/NY side, for they had 68% possession but only managed 0.13 xG and just one shot on target in the opening 45 minutes.

There was also another injury concern at the end of the first half when Evelyn Shores unleashed a bomb of a shot from outside the box that deflected off what looked like the head or shoulder of Jess Carter. The deflection caught out Ann-Katrin Berger, but her positioning meant the shot ended up hitting her right arm, resulting in the German international making a save she knew very little about.

Then, in the melee afterward, the ball slid out of play. Both Berger and Chilufya went for the ball with the two colliding and Chilufya ending up with a yellow card.

A yellow felt harsh for that play, as part of the reason for the rough collision was Berger, who slid to try to get a foot on the ball before Chilufya, making the contact look more aggressive than if she hadn't slid and gone down.

The second half got started with Kerr getting two good looks at goal within the opening few minutes. Her first shot unfortunately went right at Angel City goalkeeper Angelina Anderson, which was easily caught, and her second was excellently blocked by Gorden.

From then on, the home side took control. They had much more of the ball in the second half, with 48%, and also seemed to be able to pile on more pressure. With Gotham seemingly looking content to take a draw from this game, the tide then turned in their favor when both Bruninha and Taryn Torres were introduced in the 68th minute. Afterward, the Bats grew back into the match before being given a golden opportunity to win it.

In the 82nd minute, a cross from Jordynn Dudley struck Gorden in what looked like the chest area in Angel City's box. At the next stoppage of play, the referee held the restart for VAR to take a look at the incident.

The on-field referee then had a lengthy look at it himself. The video seemed to suggest that it mainly hit Gorden's chest and shoulder region, but the VAR kept producing still photos that made it seem like it came off of her arm instead. The on-field referee seemed to be led to believe that it was a handball, and a penalty was given Gotham's way.

Guro Reiten stepped up to take the penalty and placed it near perfectly in the bottom left of the goal, but Anderson did fantastically well to get down and stretch across to get a hand to it and make the save. While the visitors would have taken the goal, with acting head coach Shaun Harris saying that they believe the penalty kick call was correct, having that saved felt like the right outcome on what was a pretty harsh call.

That did not stop Gotham from trying to find a winning goal. Kerr had a chance in the 90th minute when she took a shot from the edge of the box that went off the crossbar and stayed out. And that was the NJ/NY team's best chance before the final whistle, with the game ending 0-0.

While this does end their four-game winning streak, their unbeaten streak extends to nine. And because of the losses from the Washington Spirit and Utah Royals FC earlier in the weekend, this draw extends Gotham FC's lead in the Shield race to seven points.
