It wasn't meant for today. NJ/NY Gotham FC lost 1-0 to the Washington Spirit, putting an end to their four-match unbeaten run in league play and their five-game unbeaten run against the Washington Spirit in all competitions. The pursuit of the first NWSL Shield in club history will be placed on pause for at least one more week with this result.
Gotham FC was not at their best today. With no Jaedyn Shaw or Jordynn Dudley, it was certainly going to make this an uphill battle. Moreover, they registered a season low in shots, with just five. Defensively, as usual, they were rock solid, but as has been the case in the absence of those two, the attack was just not anywhere near good enough in this match.
On the other hand, this was a massive win for Washington. This ended their winless streak against Gotham and kept the Shield hopes alive. They also clinched their spot in the playoffs. It wasn't the Spirit's best game either, but just getting a win at home, given their unusual struggles at Audi Field this season, is probably all they were really looking for.
Unquestionably, this was a blow to the Bats' Shield chances and also a bit of a reality check late in the season. But this is a resilient group, and they have not let a single loss snowball into something bigger at any point this season. Gotham FC has two games before the playoffs and will look to rest from this point forward and wrap up the season on a high by lifting the Shield at home on November 1.
The Shield race carries on after Gotham FC's loss
The opening 20 or so minutes saw the Washington Spirit open the game as the better team. While Gotham had a few decent looks at goal, the Spirit had far more dangerous chances.
The first real major opportunity of the game came in the 24th minute when a low cross by Trinity Rodman from the left wing was brilliantly dummied by Sofia Cantore in the box, falling to an unmarked Clara Luvanga. The Tanzania international failed to keep her shot low enough and blasted the ball over the crossbar from close range.
Seven minutes later, it was Rodman again making things happen, this time forcing a save from Ann-Katrin Berger on a tight-angle shot from a recycle after a corner kick. Three minutes later, the first dangerous Gotham attack came after a deflected cross from Rose Lavelle landed at the feet of Denise O'Sullivan. In close, O'Sullivan got a shot off, but it was comfortably saved by Spirit goalkeeper Sandy MacIver.
Washington had one more chance just before halftime again via Rodman. This time, a header from the Spirit superstar seemed to have maybe gotten the better of Berger, but with one last-ditch reach-back, the Gotham backstop managed to get a paw on it and keep the game scoreless going into halftime.
The second half began with Gotham creating most of the chances, albeit not as dangerous as what the Spirit were able to create to open the first half. Despite this pressure, the NJ/NY side did not manage a single shot during that portion of the game.
They would end up paying for their ineptitude in front of goal, as in the 70th minute Washington found the breakthrough. Halftime sub Mélissa Bethi played a great over-the-top ball to Lucia Di Guglielmo, who got just enough on the shot to misstep Berger and have it roll into the back of the net.
And that was all that the Spirit needed. They held firm for the final 20 minutes and earned a 1-0 victory. This win was also Washington's first over Gotham since the 2024 NWSL Playoff semifinals, which was a win via a penalty kick shootout. To add, the result not only secures Washington's spot in the playoffs but also keeps them in Shield contention. And, for now, it elevates them to second in the table.
This game also saw both of Gotham's recent player acquisitions, Leila Ouahabi and Olivia Wingate, make their club debuts. Ouahabi got the start and, for the most part, played well in the 59 minutes she got today. There were definitely some moments that stood out as being not so great, but those should diminish as she spends more and more time in training with her new teammates.
Wingate came on in the 59th minute and was a much-needed spark off the bench in the second half. She was able to make plays, create space for herself, and was an overall positive player in the 30 minutes she earned in this match. Like Ouahabi, expect her productivity and overall game to improve as she spends more time in training with her new teammates.
Gotham FC will now move on to next week's game against the Orlando Pride. The Florida side may not only be eliminated from playoff contention come next week's game, but will also be without Barbra Banda, as she is currently in a holding pattern after traveling back to the United States from Uganda.
