New York City FC is focusing on the now, and as they should be. The team is getting ready to open up their new home, Etihad Park, next summer. Then, they are trying to strengthen the current roster after a rough first half of the season. They might not have signed a big star who played in Europe, as some teams have in the last few years. However, they have brought back James Sands after his loan expired and signed Bénie Traoré, a forward with plenty of potential.
Eventually, NYCFC should sign a household name that has had success in Europe. At the same time, they could also look toward the future. There is one name after this World Cup that multiple teams might dream of signing, so it would make plenty of sense for the Pigeons to start figuring out a way to bring Erling Haaland to the Big Apple in about eight to 12 years.
NYCFC should one day sign Erling Haaland
This is not the first time it has been suggested that NYCFC should sign Haaland in the far future. But that is the truth: Haaland, at 25 years old, still has many more years ahead of him in Europe. He is currently signed with Manchester City F.C. through 2034 after he signed a nine-and-a-half-year contract extension in January 2025.
There have been reports and rumors that Real Madrid wants to try to sign the striker down the road, especially over the last few months. But again, his contract is for a long time, and it would likely take a lot of money for him to move. Alas, even if he does go to another top European team, in about a decade, the outlook for him may look different.
The same might be said about Major League Soccer. The league will hopefully continue to grow, and more big-name players will choose to come here. Perhaps even sooner than what fans are used to. For someone like Haaland, maybe he will see all of the stars that have come here and choose to do so once he is ready to leave Europe.
Moreover, Manchester City is NYCFC's sister club. As such, the connection to City Football Group will ideally make the Queens side a team that the Norwegian would consider. But the club will likely have to start making plans early for such a player. Haaland will probably be a very expensive signing, and with inflation, he might require a higher salary than Lionel Messi.
Of course, the salary cap will ideally be much higher, so that could help. Outside of NYCFC, the city itself is a great place for players from other countries to come to, for everyone can usually find something from their culture due to the Melting Pot that is New York City. While New York does not have as many Norwegian Americans as the Upper Midwest, the city still has a high number as a whole.
The ability to connect to a local Norwegian community might be something that NYCFC can use if they ever decide to court the Manchester City striker. And, based on his talent, the club should do everything they can when the day arrives that Haaland is ready to move on from the top European leagues.
There is no question that the star would be a great player for MLS, but it would be a huge loss if NYCFC did not sign him based on the CFG connection. He would help the club grow and would give a huge boost in chasing after the MLS Cup. And yes, it will be some time before Haaland is available, but hey, fans can dream of signing him one day.
