New York City FC is one interesting team this year. Sometimes they will get fantastic results against the top teams in Major League Soccer, like FC Cincinnati. Then, they will lose to teams toward the bottom of the standings, like they recently did to D.C. United. Overall, NYCFC had a decent August, winning three games and losing two between the Leagues Cup and MLS.

Despite being in the middle of the international break, NYCFC has a busy few weeks when they begin games on September 13. The Pigeons will play five matches this month, and some of the fixtures will be challenging. Three of the five will be at home, so after the D.C. loss, it would be ideal to pick up nine points out of nine from those games.

It is vital that the Bronx side plays well and wins against teams they should beat. Hence, here is a look at the upcoming schedule for NYCFC in September.

NYCFC's September 2025 schedule

Saturday, September 13: NYCFC at Chicago Fire FC

NYCFC and Chicago Fire FC are separated by five points in the Eastern Conference standings. In the past, the Fire would be seen as the team the Bronx side should beat. But with talented players like Hugo Cuypers and Philip Zinckernagel, the team is extremely dangerous. The Pigeons must be at their best defensively, but also score more than one goal. Sometimes, a goal is good enough, and other times it is not.

Wednesday, September 17: NYCFC vs Columbus Crew

As fans will recall, NYCFC was supposed to play the Columbus Crew in August. But poor field conditions led to the postponement of the match. Therefore, the teams will meet in September. Plus, the venue location changed from Citi Field to Yankee Stadium. But one thing remains the same, and that is the belief that the Boys in Blue can win. They shared the points earlier in the year in Ohio and have had positive results against other top sides. Moreover, the Crew has fallen in the standings after going 0-1-2 since the Leagues Cup. All NYCFC needs is a little belief and a strong defensive performance to pick up three points.

Saturday, September 20: NYCFC vs Charlotte FC

Last year, the Pigeons finally beat Charlotte FC for the first time. However, the Crown defeated them again back in July, which means the struggles against the team continue. Therefore, based on history, this might be the most difficult home game of the month. NYCFC's home advantage has been damaged. This year, they have lost four times at home. It is vital that they try to win their second match against Charlotte, especially with the next home game a few days later.

Wednesday, September 24: NYCFC vs Inter Miami CF

The biggest home game as based on MLS Media and the soccer world, will be against Inter Miami CF. Lionel Messi and friends will come to town in what will likely be the highest attended midweek game of the season, just because it is Miami. NYCFC has done well against the Herons since they joined the league, for they only lost once. Since Messi joined the Florida side, all of the competitive fixtures have ended in draws. This time, the goal will be to secure three points for the first time since March 2023.

Saturday, September 27: NYCFC at New York Red Bulls

NYCFC will finish up September with the Hudson River Derby. The Boys in Blue currently sit in eighth place while the New York Red Bulls sit in ninth. So, when the team faces one another, they still might be close in the standings, fighting for a playoff spot. This will make the derby a critical one. It could also lead to intensity and drama, for a derby is never dull.
